Quote of the Day – April 26 2012

“I can choose either to be a victim of the world or an adventurer in search of treasure. It’s all a question of how I view my life.”
― Paulo Coelho, Eleven Minutes

On this one, I’ve chosen long ago. While I may have used by people, never have I been a victim. Many times when I have entered relationships I saw in my mind’s eyes where they would lead, both good and bad. The good was love and fellowship and joy in the presence of another. The bad (relatively speaking) was lessons that I needed to learn or perhaps repeat to drive home the point I had insisted on missing before so even the bad was a win. When the time came to move on, rarely cleanly I left feeling properly devastated but never really victimized by the other. Was I victimized by myself? Perhaps so. It all depended on how badly I needed the lesson, that treasure that Coelho talks about. Are there any treasures greater than increased awareness and increased capacity for love? I don’t believe so. I am grateful for my life and all the people in it, even the ones who have challenged me, perhaps them most of all.
Blessings, G

  1. “I am grateful for my life and all the people in it, even the ones who have challenged me, perhaps them most of all.”

    I feel the same way.

Interesting thoughts about being a victim. I believe many times people focus on that. Get lost in the ‘what They did to me.’ I confess, I have too. And, there were many times in my life when indeed, something was being ‘done to me’ that was at that time, beyond my capacity, to correct. That said, did those things happening helped to build my character. Indeed, they most certainly did. Did they need to happen to build my character. Hmmmm? Not sure on that one yet. I tend to think that because of my innate capacity to survive, and then thrive, they did not take me out of the game.

I’m a memoirist. Although I resisted the work, fiercely in fact, because I didn’t want to wander around in what happened to me, or what I did to others, I think to do so, and then to have the courage to share it is very important. Especially today when the push is to PROVE you are successful, good or rather worthy, by not experiencing, or at least not admitting, to any failures.

For years I looked for a way out of writing my story. I began to read other memoirists thoughts about why they wrote their stories. The things that stuck with me, became my buoys in rough waters are: If I am created in the image of; then my story, as it really was, is God’s story. And: The pearl is the oysters autobiography.

I see myself as an adventurer. Even though I am willing to admit to and talk about my experiences as a victim and a perpetrator. As Darth Vadar and Luke Skywalker. I wasn’t inspired by the Princess. Give me a light saber and a sky ship!

    1. I am learning as I try to explore my own memories with the hope of writing through just how difficult that can be. Writing a laundry list.”This happened then this happened then this happened is relatively easy, honest emotional recollection so much more difficult.
I hear you about Luke and Darth for sure and one of the few worthwhile things to come out of the second trilogy for me was showing how much alike they were. Where Joseph Campbell’s influenced was apparent throughout the first trilogy, this was an area where it inspired in the second. Namaste.
