Quote of the Day – July 24 2012

“for there is nothing heavier than compassion. Not even one’s own pain weighs so heavy as the pain one feels with someone, for someone, a pain intensified by the imagination and prolonged by a hundred echoes.” ― Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

If we only focus on the positive do we ignore the voices that cry out in pain? Do we say to a child dying of starvation, “You just need to change your attitude and imagine yourself well fed and the Law of Attraction will make it happen”? Can we ignore evil going on in front of us because we aspire to something better? “How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?” Are all these questions ‘blowing in the wind’?
I believe compassion and love to be two of the most important qualities that we need to develop in ourselves in order to grow and evolve. I believe compassion to be developed by feeling and when possible healing the pain of others, definitely understanding it and that cannot happen by only focusing on the positive. There is so much suffering going on in the world today and so much healing needed. Understanding the causes of this pain and suffering is necessary otherwise we are just treating symptoms.
Life on this physical plane tends to be a balancing act. One of the tougher balancing points for me is between perceiving the world from the lens presented above  and the lens presented last night. It may be one of the tougher balances but any way I look at it one of the most necessary ones.
Blessings, G

  1. I guess I would refine my answer yesterday to say that I think the key place to focus action for change is inward. Are you peace or war? Are you love or hate? If I still hold anger inside then I contribute anger to the web. When I focus on what I perceive as wrong, I’m angry. The action I take about that “wrong” doesn’t come from a place of love. I really believe that when enough people have “become peace” that’s when all those “wrongs” disappear. Whatever I see wrong in he world is a reflection of something in me. When I heal the place in me (much like Hew Len’s work in ho o pono pono) that holds that “wrong” I heal the wrong out there too. Just my take.

    1. I hear you for sure. We live in turbulent times and everyone needs to find their own point of balance. I believe there is as strong a need for torchbearers who lift us up wit their focus as their is for firebrands who point out how the current ways of doing things are not working. Somehow ever the eternal Libra, i find myself somewhere in the middle, perhaps doing a bit of both. Can I do that well? I’m not sure… Thank you

  2. Your image is as strong as the quote and written thoughts – so very excellent. If we could truly open ourselves to full compassion for all fellow humans who are living in nightmares on this planet I believe we would go mad. But I think we could manage to give spare change and talk to the homeless person we see each day – we could make an effort to know our neighbors and care about their lives – we could offer some of our TV time to volunteer at our local mental health center / children’s hospital / food bank…

    1. yes so much of it is being not only the change we want to be in this world but the people we want to see.

      Thank you so much
