Quote of the Day – October 19 2012

“Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart.
…live in the question.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke

Remain curious. I’ve been given that advice a lot lately in about four different contexts. When speaking to my teenage son, when he tries on teenage defiance, don’t get angry or frustrated, remain curious.
“What are you doing?” or “Where do you see this going?” or “What do you feel is standing in the way of you following these rules?”

Instead of challenging or responding angrily to the challenges of co-workers or people in discussion groups remain curious.
“Why do you believe that?” or “What do you hear me saying?” or “Where do you believe that conclusion comes from?”

Curiosity may or may not kill the cat but it definitely tends to be a good method of staying calm and polite. This works when I start getting frustrated with myself? “What made me react that way?”, “Exactly what button did that person press?”, “What is blocking me from meditation?” It’s amazing seeing what answers come up.

  1. Challenging people when they are feeling like their already heading into a corner only makes them strike out. It’s a matter of self defense even though that may not be your intention. I like your approach, let your son think it through himself with just a shade of good guidance on your part. I do get rather upset when others conclude things for me before I have any chance of thinking it out on my own. I may arrive at the same place they do but I got there on my own. It doesn’t hurt to get input if you ask for it. I’m one of those who would rather be frustrated and work ir out myself and then if I can’t I throw it up for grabs. J.K. ps. I got your message. You deserve to feel good. I will spend more time on a response tomorrow. Got into a skype with a friend during my writing time. 🙂

  2. Give time to pause..the urge to challenge . Give reason to others ..to think
Remain silent a little longer..hear them before you utter any words that can bring..anger and disappointments..so..when ready with a boat..get your oars..step inside..give a lift to life..and smile..and think
