For any one of us does life improve or is it just our understanding and awareness of it that does? As we grow older are we able to handle the sad points easier because we have had more experience and we know that the pendulum always keeps swinging or do we just become resigned. Entropy or cyclic growth, which outlook do we have and which seems more in synch with nature? More quests to go on.

  1. I’ve known some people who got to be quite old without ever seeming to learn to sway with the breezes and remain philosophical about it so I have a notion that it helps to actually try to reach equanimity… but there are some people who seem to get more mellow without actually doing anything.

  2. “does life improve or is it just our understanding and awareness of it that does?” I wonder if they aren’t the same thing. As our understanding and awareness ‘improves’ does that not then nourish our life and spread out to nourish the life around us? At the same time Rumi’s idea is not just a one time event – it seems to recur endlessly and for some that becomes too much to accept and they turn away from learning and hide in the illusionistic comfort of mindless entertainment and consumerism – and who am I to blame them…
