Throwing Away Scripture

“When you’ve understood this scripture, throw it away. If you can’t understand this scripture, throw it away. I insist on your freedom.”
― Jack Kerouac

Is there someone you look to for answers? Oh I don’t mean a deity or abstract spiritual being. Nor do I mean being open to answers that come from others. What I am actually asking is if there is any one person or group of people who’s word you take as law. Is there a guru to whom you are a chela? Have you surrendered your freedom to him / her or has learning from this teacher brought you a greater freedom then you’ve known so far?
It seems that for most of my early adult years I was in a state of serial cheladom. I would adopt a teacher or they would adopt me (it’s not surprising that so many people feel that they have answers worth teaching. Beware of those who claim to teach much less understand absolute Truth with a capitol T tho. It’s not that they don’t have something worth teaching. In my experience, those who believe that they have found the ONLY way lack context and understanding how their way may fit into the greater whole. They are enslavers who will tie you to their path rather than help you find your own. It took me a long while to realize this tho the other lessons that came were a fair trade off.
In the long run, a true teacher sets you upon your path and frees you from theirs. Whether you understand it or not.

Turn and Return

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”
― Nelson Mandela

Do we ever return to the same place twice? It seems whether its changes in mood, energy level, perception or perhaps something experiential, we are never quite the same person from day to day so even the ways we interact with our familiar environments change from day to day. It’s a great reason to take stock of things every day to see how they’ve changed, we’ve changed or both. I know that noticing these things especially how they relate to others in my environment is another of the reasons why boredom stopped being an issue for me long ago.Sometimes, especially after a day of difficult interactions or after a night of little or no sleep, these changes don’t always seem positive. Tho, in the long run, often it is exactly those times that show where real growth and realization is necessary. Sometimes I need to be pulled away from my center to know for sure where that center is. I doubt I am alone in this.

Unplugged Hero

“Darken your room, shut the door, empty your mind. You are still in great company.”
— Austin Osman Spare

Struggling to create
I’ve lost the me time,
Taken up by the know time, the some time, the play time and the prime time
filling me, not killing me, not thrilling me
but NOW
unplug, rewind, refine, unshine
and let go
feel the flow
no row to hoe
no know to know
just slip
detach, connect, unlatch
and BE

— G A Rosenberg

Sometimes we all need to be unplugged heroes. Enjoying the solitude and at peace

Opening to the Moment

“You haven’t yet opened your heart fully, to life, to each moment. The peaceful warrior’s way is not about invulnerability, but absolute vulnerability–to the world, to life, and to the Presence you felt. All along I’ve shown you by example that a warrior’s life is not about imagined perfection or victory; it is about love. Love is a warrior’s sword; wherever it cuts, it gives life, not death.”
― Dan Millman

When is the last time you stopped and let yourself be in the moment? Letting the sounds, scents and colours of wherever you are pass through you and around you, totally open to the present without concern of doing or what was to come but simply being in the moment. I find quotes like Millman’s above a good reminder to just stop open and let myself be vulnerable. I can do it but never often enough or long enough. All too soon thoughts of what I will be doing next intrude or what I did earlier, the present making way for other periods. What would it be like if for twice a day, I opened myself to now?

Experience Life Instead of Solving it

“The mystery of life isn’t a problem to solve, but a reality to experience.”
― Frank Herbert

We humans tend to be problem-solving animals. For many of us, set a puzzle in front of us and we will work at it, if not consciously then somewhere in the back of our minds. When we don’t have problems to solve, we create them. We hear something that a friend or loved one says and we ask “Now what did they mean by that?” “How did that get there?” “Where did I put my glasses / phone / wallet?” “Why do hot dogs come in packages of eight while hot dog buns are packaged in sixes?” We ask the larger questions and to ask implies that there is an answer “How did I come to be here?” “How did everything else come to be here?” “How do I do this?”.
I tend to obsess around problems. I love working logic puzzles and when someone comes to me for advice either as a friend or as a tarot reader, I do my best to give good answers. Yet I agree with Frank Herbert’s advice above. Sometimes we have to enjoy life, even the rougher parts as the wonderful thing it is. We can’t spend so much time worrying about the hows and whys and whether we can do something better that we forget to live. I find myself in need of this reminder often.

Going the ‘Wrong’ Way

“Many times the ‘wrong’ train took me to the right place”
— Paulo Coelho

From the age of seventeen until well into my thirties my life choices could easily be judged as off. I did everything from leaving high school and home for half a year and joining a religious cult to hitchhiking across country to coming out to exploring as many different head spaces and points of view as possible. Oh for most of it, I was employed gainfully tho even then they were either jobs that involved travelling from city to city or sales jobs that I was vastly unsuited for. I also had a few minimum wage jobs and a few stints where I read cards professionally. Those, my family would look somewhat askew at tho they dismissed it as me being a ‘free spirit’ (as opposed to one chained? I would often wonder.) Still all of this wandering and exploring has helped shape me in pretty great ways. I have had direct experiences of the universe. I have met fascinating people from all walks of life and am probably more accepting and less judging of the choices of others than most of the people I know. If not for all of the adventuring I never would have fallen in love, gotten married and been raising children. I would never have had the courage to create and sell art or the willingness to explore my life and my spirit in so many ways. I have been blessed by all of the wrong trains I have taken and would not have chosen any other way.

Detaching From Success

“If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;”
— Rudyard Kipling “If”

I keep falling into the same trap. I get so caught up in wanting to do something right or optimally that I either freeze up and find myself putting things off or I set myself up to fail. This can pertain to anything from working on the tarot book to my interactions with my family. It seems that success comes easiest when it doesn’t matter whether I succeed or not. If I can detach from needing to succeed, then I give myself room to accomplish a lot more. Both personally and professionally.
