Words As Art

“I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings.” -from the Fox-”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

If I could paint you a picture with words
If I could let you see the sunrise
of my meaning
and realize
it may be different from yours
but our hearts still beat together.
Please don’t take absolute definitions
from what I say
you’d never do that from my painting
merely see interpretation and energy
and that is what I give you
We may never understand each other
if words get in the way
let my heart speak to yours
Hang me on the wall of memory
and observe my meanings
like art

  1. I find this to be an interesting poem, especially since I work so hard to find expression with words. “Please don’t take absolute definitions from what I say” is my favorite line. I understand your meaning and the poem feels like it comes from the heart.
Yet, I struggle to accept it because of my own art, which is to clearly express all that I feel with words. I can’t paint (except for a little dabbling once with charcoal), but if I could, I imagine it would look more like your paintings – abstract, symmetrical, colorful, and full of words that can never be put on paper. I love your work, sir. Keep at it!

    1. Thank you so much Tricia. I’ve been pondering quite a lot these days about how easily we wish to take the words of others, either looking for easy ways to accept totally or dismiss totally other people’s words based on who is saying them rather than consideration. I want words that will make me think and consider, not accept at face value 🙂
