Banishing Doubt

“What we need to do to allow magic to get hold of us is to
banish doubts from our minds. Once doubts are banished anything is
possible.”
― Carlos Castaneda

My doubt would have me believe
that I cannot do it
My doubt would have me believe
that if I do do it, I will not do it well
My doubt would have me believe
that it or I will not be well received
My doubt would have me believe
that I cannot believe.
I hear my doubt’s whispers
in the sinking of my heart
and then I say a resounding “F**K YOU!”
I will do it
I will do it well
It will be received as it will
and belief is not as important as doing
I send my doubt packing
at least for the moment
I do this as often as needed
for doubt don’t stay away long
Still, no reason to let them unpack anyway
they are the unwanted solicitors of my being
always trying to sell me something.

Dreaming Shadows

“We must never stop dreaming. Dreams provide nourishment for the soul, just as a meal does for the body.”
― Paulo Coelho

I dream myself
in different ways
and so shape my path.
Inconsistent?
Perhaps but in a constant way
I pick and choose who I will be
yet imperfectly
for who can fully live a dream
when faced with shadowed reality
what better way to deal with shadows
then cast them in the light
exposing the hidden drama
long locked away
the more of me exposed
the more that I can be

Questioning

“At the end of the day, the questions we ask of ourselves determine the type of people that we will become.”
― Leo Babauta

How do I face my shadow self and help others face theirs?
How do I find the courage to become more each day?
How do I embrace the paradox of being without flinching or becoming positional?
How do I practice compassion even when its difficult?
How do I open my heart and surrender?
How do I motivate myself to prioritize these things when the world beckons me towards mediocrity?
How can I remember to keep questioning and to listen silently in stillness for the answers?

Masks

“We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We all become what we pretend to be.”
― Patrick Rothfuss

We become what we pretend to be. This is at once both wonderful and terrifying. It means we have power to recreate ourselves in the image that we want. It also means tho that all too easily we can become trapped in roles that we once needed but have outgrown. If in our past we have been hurt by others, we adopt a mask of being invulnerable. We act callous and indifferent and allow no one to touch us. What happens years later when we meet someone whom we could love? However in order to love we have to make ourselves vulnerable. It seems that damn mask won’t come off. Luckily with work, we can show the vulnerabilities are there, revealing them to those whom we wish to be close to. Oh we still have our mask but by pointing out where the weak parts are, the mask can crumble. It does take work tho and a willingness to overcome fear.
What happens when we aspire spiritually but have lost our way? We have adapted a mask of worldliness that we have become stuck in. Could we adopt the same principle? We meditate and genuinely challenge ourselves to act without masks until we truly have lost them all. This may be the most important work we have ever done in our lives.

Take a Moment

“Observe the wonders as they occur around you.
Don’t claim them. Feel the artistry
moving through, and be silent.”
— Rumi

Sometimes the wonders passing through get pretty dark. Our relationships or some other area of our lives feels troubled and the taste of life just kind of crumbles or turns bitter like wine that has just started to turn. We turn to friends yet don’t wish to be burdensome with troubles that objectively seem minor. It’s just internally that they jump at our inner walls battering already beleaguered defences. To me that is the time to tune everything out put on some music that’s calming and inspirational and take myself out of the picture.
I can meditate. I can make art and write. I can walk in nature or I can close my eyes and do anyone of those or countless other things in my imagination. It’s amazing how even the shortest of removes can strengthen one’s resolve to see things through. It sounds trite and rather new agey to say ‘find your happy place’ and I am not suggesting living there or even sojourning. Hiding from troubles tends to strengthen them. However when we take these moments to strengthen ourselves then we can come back with a lot fresher perspective on what has been troubling us…

Breaking the Past

“Man is ignorant of the nature of his own being and powers. Even his idea of his limitations is based on experience of the past, and every step in his progress extends his empire. There is, therefore, no reason to assign theoretical limits to what he may be, or to what he may do.”
— Aleister Crowley

Are we our past mistakes or our past limits? Because in the past we were unable to accomplish something does that mean we are unable to do it now or is it possible that we can use past defeats and learn from them and accomplish more than we ever dreamed possible? Each day we recreate ourselves anew and that means another chance to do something that we have never done before. Oh I don’t mean that we repeat past attempts in the same way. It is a truism that doing the same thing in exactly the same way and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Using the past as a teacher, looking within to see where things went wrong even if it was with our resolve can spur us on to achieving new heights and ever expand our awareness. I can’t imagine anything more hopeful than that.

Words As Art

“I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings.” -from the Fox-”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

If I could paint you a picture with words
If I could let you see the sunrise
of my meaning
and realize
it may be different from yours
but our hearts still beat together.
Please don’t take absolute definitions
from what I say
you’d never do that from my painting
merely see interpretation and energy
and that is what I give you
We may never understand each other
if words get in the way
let my heart speak to yours
Hang me on the wall of memory
and observe my meanings
like art

Withholding the No

“No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit.”
― Ansel Adams

One day when I was walking through a nearby park, I met an old man and we start talking. He talked about his early life in the military and then later on how he traveled by rail and hitchhiked all over the country. I loved his stories. Oh he expressed many views I didn’t agree with. He seemed a bit racist and his view of politics was way different than mine. I didn’t voice my disagreement tho because I wanted to hear more of his stories that so beautifully expressed his life.
It’s my experience that most people don’t take well to being told their views are mistaken, which by many means different than their own. Oh I’m not shy about expressing my particular reality tunnels either here or when asked, I just have never been comfortable negating the views of others. Think of how many stories we would miss out on if we shut someone off just because they offered an opinion, even one we chose to find offensive. Eventually people’s views especially ones we find ignorant will grow and expand given half a chance. Reality has a way of widening most viewpoints these days and seldom if ever have I seen a viewpoint narrowed by what has befallen someone.
I will always listen to people’s stories because sometimes that is the most precious thing they have to share. I have yet to meet anyone whom I couldn’t learn something from and my favourite hobby is curing my own ignorance…
