Facets of Self

“I’ve tried to become someone else for a while, only to discover that he, too, was me.”
― Stephen Dunn

So many people live within me. Every aspect that has surfaced so far I’ve explored in the quest for greater self-knowledge. When contradictions exist I either hold them or resolve thin since it has become evident that one can hold two conflicting ideas and ideals at once. Yet every shadow has been a different reflection of the totality. It’s not so much disassociation as building a community of myself that interacts with the community that is each of you. We all contain multitudes. We are a dutiful or rebellious child, a parent, a friend and possibly several different kinds of friend. We are seekers of understanding and magicians looking to affect our universe. We are co-workers and creators. We are idealists and cynics and sometimes we must blend each of these or all of these in different combinations. We may enjoy all these different facets of our existence, never losing sight that they are but parts of a whole that we come to know more and more.

Gifts of the Past

“Often it is the gifts of our past that allow us to see our way into the future”
–Randall Wolfe

Sometimes when we find ourselves facing self-doubt or lack of confidence about the future we think of something from our past and it gives us the momentum to go forward again. It maybe something a beloved relative or friend told us. It may be a favourite song or story or toy that reminds us of a happier and more hopeful time allowing us to once again move forward. Just the memory whether it pops into our mind or has some sensual stimulus (the aroma of apples and cinnamon cooking or the feel of an old stuffed animal) can install in us the will to move forward.

Worlds and Stars I offered
yet she was not impressed
for she wanted my universe
and would take nothing less

In the end I settled
for giving her my heart
Not realizing it was
what she asked for from the start

Compassion and Paradox

“Toast, toast, toast…nothing trite, nothing corny, nothin crude. There went most of my repertoire. I remembered once I’d heard a wise old barkeeper say once, and used it: “To the ones who weren’t as lucky.”
–Spider Robinson

I recently thought of a paraphrase of the old capitalist motto: “He who dies with the most joys wins”. By this, I mean that a life measured in moments of joy, love and wonder seems much more worthwhile than a life measured in things acquired. Of course, to really up our joy levels, it helps if we discover and live our life’s purpose, our true will for a life filled fulfilling one’s purpose would almost naturally be a life enjoyed.
I have had friends challenge me on this. They ask me how I can enjoy my life when there is so much misery around. The very planet itself suffers from the rather horrible things being done to her. People live in terror and poverty and shame. Where is their joy and how can I possibly be happy without turning a blind eye to all of the pain. The simple answer is that I can’t turn away. I feel the suffering of others and feel it acutely. I do what I can and it is never enough.
Like so much in life there is paradox involved. Can I help others best by wallowing in misery with them or can I do more by radiating the joy of a life lived to its fullest? Compassion can often mean that our heart hurts and we feel the joy of existence simultaneously. This is seldom an easy balance but a worthwhile one to find.

Solace After Solitude

“You cannot find peace by avoiding life.”
― Virginia Woolf

Too long I hid away
thinking that in solitude
I would discover meaning
I learned much
but the very things that brought me here
that I escaped
stayed unresolved
Tho I lived in peace
I was not peaceful
Too many others carried with me
in my heart.
I spoke to their echoes
but only I echoed back
Now I return
to resolve the past
to dissolve the lie
of my old lives
Only this way can outer peace join inner
and fractures start to heal.

Fortunate First Steps

“Fortunate are those who take the first steps.”
― Paulo Coelho

To change and grow takes courage. All too often we believe that we will change instantly just by wishing it to be so. That is an important step to be sure. Tho it is only the starting step. Next comes the actual doing of the change, the steps needed to make it work.
Say for instance, we want to change our habit of procrastination. We make goals for ourselves that we will see a few projects through to the end. We then have to work towards achieving the goals. Perhaps we decide that for 15 minutes a day we will do something that we have been putting off for awhile. Call and make the appointments we’ve been putting off. Research or write the next page or poem. Meditate. Baby steps are ok. If we can do just that one thing each day that brings us closer to achieving what we want and get into that habit,we will quickly find ourselves progressing. It’s those continual fortunate first steps that build the momentum to bring us success.

Essence and Mirrors – A Few Random Thoughts Floating Down the Consciousness Stream

“What should I possibly have to tell you, oh venerable one? Perhaps that you’re searching far too much? That in all that searching, you don’t find the time for finding?”
― Hermann Hesse

In searching for the true essence of something, do we deconstruct it, reduce it to its component elements? In all the parts that make up our physical form, where do we find our essence… a doctor (or butcher) could dissect us in every way possible and still never see it… Perhaps to understand the essence of something, the trick is not to open it but to open ourselves…and find that in ourselves that relates…

True Mirrors, whether they be people or objects can either cause us unbelievable bliss or painful aversion..all depending on how well we can handle what is reflected back to us..

It’s not meaning that we search for as much as that something in ourselves that will help us know and understand.
