Autumn

“I notice Autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.”
— Friedrich Nietzsche

Autumn more than any other time speaks to my internal self. Patly because I was born in Autumn a time that makes me generally reflective. There is something tho about the look of coloured leaves falling to the ground and their smell decomposing that inspires me. I enjoy the chill in the air and the blend of summer warmth and winter coolness. I will spend this next few months finishing up some projects and starting some new ones and generally transitioning to the quiet of winter.

Musing on Inspiration

“I love you, Lucien, but I am a muse, you are an artist, I am not here to make you comfortable.”
― Christopher Moore

In Greek Mythology, the muses were the daughters of Zeus and the titan Mnemosyne(Memory). They governed over various arts and were said to inspire artists to create. They were alluring and graceful and many an artist tried to woo the muses when they undertook a new endeavour. From a kaballistic standpoint, Zeus would be Chesed (expansion into form). In other words, art’s inspiration comes from the expansion of memory into form. This would include but not be exclusive to the artist’s personal memory. It would also include to my mind both the archetypal memories that live in our collective unconscious and atavistic memories that are buried even deeper thus giving us a bottomless well of inspiration would that we could tap into it.
How can we call on the muses? How can we find the inspiration we need to create? Here is an exercise that you may find useful. Imagine if you will swimming below the surface in a clear beautiful river. You sense that you are not alone in your swim that there are other forms swimming around you. You come out of the water into a beautiful clear moonlit night. As you leave the water you sense that you are not alone. There is a woman there, attractive and somewhat shy. Ask her her name and what she may have for you in the way of ideas and inspiration. Listen to what she has to tell you.
Understand tho that many of the memories that lie below the surface may not be pleasant comforting ones. Then again, we seldom create from comfort. Usually we write or draw or create based on themes and ideas that we are trying to work out within ourselves. Quite often the work of creating art is the purest form of shadow work and in interacting with our creation, we gain awareness of parts of ourselves we would otherwise be unaware of.

Drawing the Moon

“The moon likes secrets. And secret things. She lets mysteries bleed into her shadows and leaves us to ask whether they originated from otherworlds, or from our own imaginations.”
— Charles de Lint

The moon runs through my veins
and gives me succour.
In the dark she draws me in
and enlivens me
We whispers in the night hours
She keeps my confidences
as I walk beneath her
In her fullness her tides draw me
and racede as she grows dark
She is ever changing yet constant
as her face becomes veiled
Each aspect entrances me
in new ways.
With Diana I hunt
my being for new depths
To Isis I ask for protection
Hecate draws my secret being
and plants the seed for change.

Waking Up To Something More

Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.
— Peter Caroll

We each have so many calls to wake from the slumber of our every day lives. Many of us just hit the snooze button feeling that its too difficult or tedious to work towards self-realization. We go to our jobs or school, we have dinner with our families, maybe take in a movie or watch television and then go to our sleep. However if we but listen to our inner selves we realize that there is so much more to life than that. By pushing ourselves forward, we each have the potential to make a true difference in the world. All it takes is that first step of setting our intent and then following through. Oh there are times when we’ll falter and fall back into old habits but the alternative is one more day of sameness. It may be safe but ultimately how satisfying is it? So tell me what is it that you would like to do to make a difference? What are you doing now?

Silent Hearts Screaming

I thought I would be understood without words.
— Vincent Van Gogh

In silence, hearts reach out screaming
for understanding.
Stretching forward, emoting like mimes in a fire
they gesture and
call for attention from…anyone
no in each case it is a specific need
a special type who will know them
and answer wordlessly in return.
Yet the clown hearts keep burning
tho sometimes another comes
silently, they put out the flames
and mutely answer the call.
a heart has found another
something of beauty is created.

I have Met the Enemy and He is Me…

“Many times we are our worst enemy. If we could learn to conquer ourselves, then we will have a much easier time overcoming the obstacles that are in front of us.”
― Stephan Labossiere

It’s easy to find external enemies. It seems like there are those who will say or do things that rub us the wrong way. Perhaps they are bigots who are trying to keep us, our friends, or people who belong to whatever minority we do down. This tends to play out on both personal and world levels. Maybe we have a rival in either business or love or a boss, supervisor or teacher who we feel is making our lives needlessly difficult. The list of people who we may have negative reactions to is long and while we busy ourselves with them we overlook the real enemy, ourselves.
If I could conquer the things in myself that block me from achieving my goals than anyone or anything else would be easy.If I could overcome my distractibility then I would no longer get distracted by others. If I quit smoking I would be healthier. If I achieved more of my goals than I would be too busy to worry about what others were doing. It’s so easy to externalize our problems and get angry rather than facing the enemy in the mirror.

Happy

It takes time to be happy. A lot of time. Happiness, too, is a long patience.
— Albert Camus

Maybe I’m being shallow and my outlook is almost definitely privileged . I mean when you look at the world and at most of the things that life brings us, happiness seems in pretty short supply. For anyone with an ounce of compassion it is all too easy to feel sorrow, anger and depression at the circumstances not only of our own lives but in the far worst ones of all too many others in this world. Yet what does anger, sorrow and depression give us? None of those help us to better our own lives in any way and they definitely don’t help better the lives of others. I want to be able to help others and better my own life but given a choice I would rather choose to do it happily.
I believe that even in the worst of circumstances happiness is a choice. It’s not always an easy one but if we decide to look at what we have and find purpose in what we’re doing and keep a sense of humour about it (talk about something else that is in all too limited supply) than we can find that happy place and face life through it. Oh the other emotions come and pass through and indeed the things that make us angry can give us purpose yet staying angry clouds our judgement. It is also not an emotion I have ever been able to sustain for very long.
So how do we do it? How do we make happiness a choice? First of all decide that is what we want to be. Next find something in our day that brings a smile to our face whether it be a flower, a joke, children playing or animals. When its time to be sad or angry then feel it but then find the song or event that brings us back to that place. Try it. It can become life changing.
Blessings, G
