The dark and transgressing principle in the occult philosophy is traditionally feminine by nature. The female is the “left” and the “sinister”. The world of qliphoth in the Qabalah, or the Sitra Ahra (the Left Side) is considered as feminine, and Lilith, the demon whore, is viewed as its personification. The left side of the Qabalistic Tree of Life is also feminine and is called “The Pillar of Severity”. It contains the sephira Geburah which, according to some Qabalistic theories, was the source of the qliphoth. The imbalance of the powers of Geburah/Din (judgement/punishment) poured out of the Tree and created the Sitra Ahra, the “other side”, or the “left side”, which is the kingdom of evil and darkness. — Asenath Mason
