Wearing (And Chewing) the Dark Scenery – A Consciousness Stream

“I can see myself before myself—
A being through dark scenery.”
― Dejan Stojanovic

We shroud ourselves in self illusion…wearing veils of protective clothing and if most of us undress at all, we do it in the dark in our sleep where our masks fall off only to be replaced as soon as daylight hits…For to see ourselves true takes work. It starts with a commitment to honesty and a willingness to catch ourselves in our own lies…accepting imperfections and knowing they need work. Continue with discipline and meditation and a desire to confront our demons and accept them as part of us. Yes part of us appears ugly, some of that ugliness has come from those who love us and others in the world. Some we have built up for protection. It’s all part of that dark scenery that we wear. Once we can accept our shadow selves and commit to honesty we need to go deeper still. How far have I gotten? Still miles to go before I stand unclothed before myself but I’m working on it.

Shadows of Home Along the Road

““When within yourself you find the road, the right road will open.”
― Dejan Stojanovic, The Creator

The road inside lies ever homeward
with shadows of home along the way
Approximations of the final resting place
that may be settled into for a time
yet never fulfilling the heart
Our true home keeps calling
filling the settled self with longing
for the shadow while comforting never satisfies
I will depart the shadows with love for their gifts
and move onward
my bag filled with shadow memories
Along the way I will pass more shades
that my road inward throws up
and my bag will lighten and fill
and then empty again
as my terminus approaches

Listening to Nature

“There is another alphabet, whispering from every leaf, singing from every river, shimmering from every sky.”
― Dejan Stojanovic

Nature is so easy to talk to
away from human ears
I can speak my heart
conveying in song and story
everything inside unfettered.
Much better tho
when in silence I listen
Everything speaks in its course
the wind whispers and roars
the ocean sings a song to the moon
while crickets provide rhythm
Birds screech and hoot and the leaves rustle
each advising me in their way
they harmonize in a way I’ve yet to learn.
As I hear the perfect expression of their being
I begin to act in kind.

Returning for the First Time

“Arrival in the world is really a departure and that, which we call departure, is only a return.”
― Dejan Stojanovic

If we truly change from our experiences and learn anything than we never return so much as constantly arrive to see each previous stop as if for the first time. Is that a trite observation? As much as we may love the familiar and as much as it may give us a sense of continuity and home, isn’t there value in ever seeing even that which is most familiar to us as if we were seeing it for the first time? When is the last time you discovered something new about your partner and spouse? How about your parents or your pets? It seems in accepting the familiar it becomes all too easy to take it for granted and so lose appreciation. What would it be like to constantly see the familiar through new eyes?
