Unfolding Our Own Myth

“Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.”
― Rumi

What is your story? What is the myth you will pass on to your children and grandchildren? How did it begin? What have you been striving for? What hardships did you face on the road and how did you overcome them? In what ways were you tested and how did you do? What was your motivation? What kind of story is it? Can you put it to music?
We are our stories yet we constantly recreate them both our past and our present. We cannot follow another’s trail tho we can try to ape it and thus do ourselves and them a grave injustice? We are the heroes and our stories are unique? By telling them, we add to the world’s story. Weaving new myths that may just stand the test of time.

Take a Moment

“Observe the wonders as they occur around you.
Don’t claim them. Feel the artistry
moving through, and be silent.”
— Rumi

Sometimes the wonders passing through get pretty dark. Our relationships or some other area of our lives feels troubled and the taste of life just kind of crumbles or turns bitter like wine that has just started to turn. We turn to friends yet don’t wish to be burdensome with troubles that objectively seem minor. It’s just internally that they jump at our inner walls battering already beleaguered defences. To me that is the time to tune everything out put on some music that’s calming and inspirational and take myself out of the picture.
I can meditate. I can make art and write. I can walk in nature or I can close my eyes and do anyone of those or countless other things in my imagination. It’s amazing how even the shortest of removes can strengthen one’s resolve to see things through. It sounds trite and rather new agey to say ‘find your happy place’ and I am not suggesting living there or even sojourning. Hiding from troubles tends to strengthen them. However when we take these moments to strengthen ourselves then we can come back with a lot fresher perspective on what has been troubling us…

Evolve

“Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.”
― Rumi

Trade your riches for magic beans
take the offered adventure in innocence
Climb the hill to see what’s there…
Show compassion to a stranger
Show compassion to a friend
Show compassion to yourself
Open yourself up to a new outlook.
Imagine what the world would look like if everything you knew was wrong…
Introduce yourself as a stranger
See yourself as pure, unchanging…
sacrifice something that no longer suits you
Mditate and be
Surrender it all to be who you’ll become…

Casting Spells

“Words are a pretext. It is the inner bond that draws one person to another, not words.”
― Rumi

Yet words cast spells and bind reality into existence
they bring us together and rub us raw against each other
as each rough edge, exposed wears down
we smooth and sooth
and then skim ourselves across the water
casting more spells in turn.
By our words we are known
and by our deeds we are told
we erect Towers with our words
then crash them upon the shore of our beings
waiting for truer ones to come…
Without words how would we ever know silence?
— GAR

The Dance Continues

“Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.”
― Rumi

dancing through hazy conversational memories,
making sense in the abstract
while the concrete moment falls around me…
Dancing, praying, hoping, laying….
and still the mountain calls.
Climbing it will be another dance
one of purpose and intent
and as I reach the top
one of vision as I seek
the next steps
My rhythm may be off
yet to my music I hold true
as gradually the tune’s completeness
returns to view…
— G A Rosenberg

And I have been so honoured by those with who I share my dance. I thank you all my fellow wise foolish dancers.

Unfold Your Own Myth

“Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.”
― Rumi

“This always happens to me. I have everything going my way and then bam… the universe laughs at me and my life falls apart”
“I can’t win for losing”
“Life’s a bitch”
No, No, No, No. NO NO NO!!!!!!
Are these the stories we want to tell ourselves? Really? We can do better than that?
“My life keeps getting better all the time”
“No matter how bad things feel, I know I have these things that make me happy”
“I feel grateful for being alive in a world with those flowers or eyes and a smile like that girl / man had.”
Do the above sound overly syrupy or sentimental to you? I can see how but seriously no matter how bad things have gotten for me, pretty consistently the difference between happiness and anger and despair has come down to a choice.
Try it, if you feel like things have been rough for you lately, ask yourself these questions at the end of each day. What was the most beautiful thing I saw today? What made me laugh? If nothing else what am I thankful for? What is the highest outcome I could hope for tomorrow? Keep asking yourself those questions and watch your life start to change.

Quote of the Day – February 20 2013

“Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.”
― Rumi

I have a bit of a confession, folks. When it comes to dancing as in at a club or at a wedding I kind of suck. Oh I can figure out the movements and possibly the rhythm but hardly ever do the twain meet. For years this stopped me from even trying to dance. Of course being out of step with those around me has been a fairly common theme in my life. In a similar way I can perceive the rhythms and I can get the steps yet  they are not my steps so when I try to do them it becomes somewhat unnatural.
Sometime in the last few years tho I loosened up quite a bit. I’ve started dancing my own steps to the music in my head and whether or not it suits other’s aesthetics it expresses my own and that’s a good thing. There is something amazing and prayer like in movement and letting yourself go. Likewise, in my life, I have given up trying to fit into anyone else’s definitions except that of my life itself.

Quote of the Day – November 2 2012

“Your hand opens and closes, opens and closes. If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralysed. Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated as birds’ wings.”
― Rumi

Can I communicate with colour
Can you understand my reds and greens or does the purple cause hesitation
and puzzle meant on your part
chartreuse pink may say it just right as long as not too much is red into…

My selves dance around in chaotic hue
combining into pictures that lack words
and words to songs not yet written
that I sing into the Karaoke machine

which self will i be
why must i choose now
i will be the voice for them all
knowing that each feeds into the total
not only does the elephant exist
he manifests in me…
well partially anyway

or is that holy
for yes that comes through to
enough that i can recognize the
divinity I see in you
Ewe, not sheepishly i realize
that you are a voice within as well

Quote of the Day – August 11 2012

“Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.”
― Rumi,

Cleverness never seems to get me as far as I would like it to. Oh there’s something to be said for being witty, being quick, having the right answer but in the long run the fastest way to avoid learning at times is the belief that I have all the answers. Thank you universe for sparing me from that at least most of the time. Still I see it surprisingly often. People so convinced they know that they close themselves off to what could be learned from others. I kind of find that self-limiting tho I guess it is a way to have an unchallenged world view.

Quote of the Day – May 20 2012

“Lovers find secret places inside this violent world where they make transactions with beauty”
–Rumi

Enter the secret place
that lies between my ears
I live at the crossroads
each moment being where past meets future
and here meets there
From here all choices are possible
possible? nay necessary
or perhaps inevitable

I’ve always loved the in-between places, the hallways where any door is open to choice and new ones appear as old ones close forever. Each doorway begins a journey. All I have to do is choose.
