The Gift of Pain

“Pleasure blocks, but pain clears the way of inspiration. Tagore says: ‘When the string of the violin was being tuned it felt the pain of being stretched, but once it was tuned then it knew why it was stretched’. So it is with the human soul. While the soul goes through pain, torture and trouble it thinks that it would have been much better if it had gone through life without it. But once it reaches the culmination of it then, when it looks back, it begins to realize why all this was meant: it was only meant to tune the soul to a certain pitch.”
~Hazrat Inayat Khan

I felt the pain of loneliness
until I realized the gift of my own company
and learned connection to those I met along the way.
I felt the pain of hunger
until I knew how good food could taste.
I felt the pain of jealousy
until I realized my own worth

Everything that has hurt me
has brought me greater strength.
Every tear I shed
watered the ground I walked on
and nurtured life
Everything that laid me low
ultimately raised me up in truer ways
Every time my heart was sick
healing found its course.

Walking Under Your Starry Sky

“Reach high, for stars lie hidden in you. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.”
― Rabindranath Tagore

Last night I dreamt
I walked under your starry sky
Awestruck lit by your being
the dimmest corners of my soul revealed
I felt my heart roused
and looked within
and you were there as well.
I sang you golden memories
and melted in your being
Tonight let me be your sky
and we will dream together
new beginnings as old as time
Eternal memories yet to be written.

Quote of the Day – April 13 2012

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”
–Rabindranath Tagore

I know well the clouds that Tagore meant. Running late for a meeting. Having to go after the dog that has once again escaped the yard. Unexpected telephone calls from social workers.. Any one of the things that can be seen as stressors. I really like Tagore’s take on it tho and more and more I see what he means. Even tho any of these things can throw me off my schedule, they can also be seen as adding flavour or colour to the day. The more I adjust my outlook to see them in this way, the more they can be enjoyed rather than be thrown by them. More and more I am getting there.

Quote of the Day – January 23 2012

“You can’t cross the sea merely by staring at the water”
–Rabindranath Tagore

For too long I have stood here, looking out, knowing that one day i need venture forth one more time and journey not only in the inner way that I’ve grown so good at but externally as well. Each moment the adventure awaits yet which of us has the courage to take that first step? If we speak honestly we admit that each moment has been part of the journey and this latest step yet another in line yet why do some steps seem so much more difficult than others? Yet very often those are the ones most worth taking. Part of it is also acknowledging where and who we are without resistance. Only by doing this can we get to where we’re going. Namaste, G
