“The first and most important thing an individual can do is to become an individual again, decontrol himself, train himself as to what is going on and win back as much independent ground for himself as possible”
― William S. Burroughs
Listen, do you hear them? Can you hear those well-meaning voices telling you how you should do what you’re doing or not to do it at all or perhaps what you should be doing instead? After all don’t you want to fit in? Don’t you want the acceptance of others? I once worked with a woman who told me that she believed that whatever society deemed proper she would do. If everybody rubbed blue mud in their navels, then she would to. I didn’t appreciate at the time the ironically unique illustration for her philosophy that she chose. Instead her lectures on propriety made me dress and act even more outré or at least as much as I could get away with without losing my job. Gradually I came to realize that if everything I did was an act of rebellion than nothing was. Rather than being an individual I was an anti-robot reacting against conformity and thus conforming to its opposite. Being an individual means considering everything and choosing what reflects myself regardless of how society sees it.

“Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.”
― William S. Burroughs
Patience to wait and to weigh possibilities except that chewing over things too much becomes so much mental mastication…internal work more stressful than external, obsession doesn’t solve but dissolves… a solution that ends in dissolution. I’ve noticed that through calm action, walking the dogs…playing a game, yoga, meditation… the answers comes faster and more often…I put out the question to the universe .. like a stone thrown into the water and eventually if I do not splash around too much the answer ripples back..

I love problem solving. Give me a puzzle or a problem and I’ll worry at it like a dog with a bone or a chew toy. I’ll keep poking at it and prodding at it and looking at it from all angers. I’ll get frustrated when its not so easily solved. I might swear and walk away and then do something else and as soon as I resolve to do that, magic happens. Almost invariably the avenue to solving the problem presents itself as soon as I take a breath to do something else. It also helps to grab the dog’s leash and take her for a walk. The answers come then as well. It’s as if I program my consciousness with the known data and main avenues of approach and I start the program going and I walk away. I love that feeling when the penny hits the slot and the solution appears whole in my brain. There is very little like it. It’s just a matter of stopping. Well stopping and being open to the answer.
Try this experiment with me. Think about a question you’ve had in your mind for awhile. Anything that may be puzzling you will do. Think about it for a minute. Now get up and stretch. Still yourself.. Sh… listen, listen. Now let it go. Did a solution or a new approach offer itself? It’s amazing how often this has worked for me.
