Distance

“The profoundest distances are never geographical.”
― John Fowles

We spoke and I felt the distance
My words could not swim
and arrive undistorted
so far the gap between us
no matter how strong their stroke
We stood together
a million miles apart
for i could not fathom
and you could not fathom
each other’s starting points.
I put a message in a bottle
and released it
hoping to reach you that way
it returned tear stained unread…
I could reach out and touch you
yet you’d never feel it
for you were too far away…
I moved
and you moved
yet the distance remained..
tho each closer to where the other began…
perhaps I never knew
yet still our love reached out
the gap narrowed but remained
as hope does

Thought Ghosts

“Consciousness, unprovable by scientific standards, is forever, then, the impossible phantom in the predictable biologic machine, and your every thought a genuine supernatural event. Your every thought is a ghost, dancing.”
― Alan Moore

At night
lying in bet
the thought ghosts come out to play
some bear chains
concerns about the past
or worries about mundane matter
Others dance
an ongoing soundtrack to dreams
joyous, somber, calming and terrifying
in their turn
Some delight in their whimsy
and some filled with awe
as archetypes and deities visit
and alter the landscape as
only they can.
Once I saw a whimsy
making lyrics of my friends
another singing dirty rhymes
while eating ice cream
then there was the dragons
keeping their own council
but overwhelming with their presence
I love to live inside their heads
and they return the favour
One by one they fall silent
as I pass through their land on the way to sleep.

Starlight Wishes

“There wouldn’t be a sky full of stars if we were all meant to wish on the same one.”
― Frances Clark

Everyone wishes on the North Star
or the first one seen that night
They wish and dream
most for the same things
They wish money or love
wealth and health
and while gratitude
i feel for the measure
of those gifts I have
or may have
My dream is different.
So I found a new star
and wished for some of its light
I wanted words and visions
to flow from my hands
as the star flowed into me.
I wanted to wake
the slumbering heart
of those who wouldn’t see
I yearned for stories to tell
in ways that would be true
I would be Prometheus
and carry the light home
I would not hide it
nor horde it
but give it away
in art I made
and words written
So I will wish on a farther star
and take what may be given.

Inner Truth

“If you stumble about believability, what are you living for? Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. What is your problem with hard to believe?”
― Yann Martel

Hard to believe my life got so good
Hard to believe I’m trying
Hard to believe I’ve lasted this long
Hard to forget my crying

I used to find my beliefs
blossoming like some flower
Then they left me one by one
felt like I rented by the hour
It’s hard to have faith
in anything, when faith
leaves you bleeding
It’s not so much a high ideal
that fed this junkie’s needing

I was that clown
that aimless fool
who wandered from sect to sect
but too much sects
leaves one unimpressed
till none could have affect

I finally gave up
stopped searching outside
myself for deeper truth
Needing to believe
in someone else
insecurities of youth
Inside myself
the universe
connection at the core
A deeper light
A deeper love
than any I’ve known before
