Quote of the Day – February 10 2013

“Always ask yourself, why does this story matter? Ask and keep asking. And be as frank in your answer as all your courage will allow. When it comes to storytelling, life’s too short to waste it on stories that don’t matter.”
– Billy Marshall Stoneking.

I read the above and I feel a bit humbled. In my writing, I try to make what I say to people relevant. When I write of my past, I choose not only the stories I need to tell but the ones that I hope are meaningful, that matter. I know that a story that matters has life beyond the storyteller and in truth matters more than a storyteller ever can. Do I succeed? I don’t know. I’d rather stay unsure as overconfidence much like in parenting too often means failure.

Quote of the Day – February 9 2013

“Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.”
― Miyamoto Musashi

We tend to overlook those things closest to us. Often we take for granted the things and people that help us the most in life because knowing we can count on them, we accept them as being there never quite realizing the gifts they give us every day. Likewise sometimes we miss taking steps towards our goals because they seem so far away. Yep if we hold them in sight they get closer every day. A lot of wisdom can be found in Miyamoto Musashi’s “The Book of the Five Rings”. There are after all many ways to be a warrior.

Tarot Post – Four of Wands

Four of Wands (Completion / Structure)

Four of WandsFour of Wands (Revised) by G A Rosenberg

Coming together
Enjoying harmony now
We create our space

We’ve found our way here
United in calm centre
eternal rapture

intense attraction
holds our joint attention here
happiness ensues

Every moment has prepared us for this one
this shining instance
our spirits glow
Our beings know
the wildness that has come before
and the chaos that may spiral hereafter
yet for now we contain perfection
May we take this moment
and carry it forward
in freedom and joy

Wands deal with force, creative, spiritual, and vital. Fours express a stability of the energy, one might even say a containment.  Fire contained can be used to heat and cook and forge but it is not a hundred percent natural. Fire longs to expand freely and so it is in the four of wands. Here is a moment where that energy and force is brought into usefulness. I often think of the four wands in configuration as resembling a marriage canopy and there is something apt about the analogy. So much comes together in the union of two people before their community. It is a spiritual force who’s intensity cannot be maintained yet for the moment is there.

Astrological correspondance – Venus in Aries – Aries is not the most natural place for Venus. Aries tends to be very individualistic while Venus is a very sensual, love-oriented energy. When Venus is in Aries, there is a feeling of immense energy combined in a beautiful form, There is an attraction towards independence and self-expression, an attempt if you will to contain that which can only briefly be contained.

The trigram for Water is over the trigram for Fire. Everything is in its rightful place. Everything broken has been mended. The lovers are united and eveyone lives happily ever after. The question is where do you go from there? Such perfection is by its very nature unstable. From this point things either break apart or go into standstill and stagnation.

When the Four of Wands occurs in a reading, it is a time of joy and boundless energy. It is a time of freedom where things are stable and we can go after anything that we wish. The question that arises is what do we do with this energy? Where do we go from here?

When the Four of Wands shows up reversed in a reading, it is still a time of happiness but the happiness and energy may not be that apparent. It may also indicate that the success and containment of the Four of Wands upright may be applied in a very untypical and unorthodox way.

Quote of the Day – February 8 2013

“Everything changes once we identify with being the witness to the story, instead of the actor in it.”
― Ram Dass

There is part of our awareness that is called in Eastern philosophy Turiya, that Ken Wilber refers to as the witness. It is the part of ourselves that watches everything unfold in our consciousness without judgement, not acting but watching emotions, thoughts and actions that flow by. Whenever I get caught up in the day to day, forgetting in the words of Richard Bach, that what is going on around me “is not reality” I try hard to imagine how this witness sees what is going on and it tends to calm me down pretty quickly. It definitely tends to help with the raising of a fourteen year old and helps even more in dealings with others in general I find. Oh I still find myself prone to irritation and frustration but relating to the witness it just becomes part of the ever present flow of being.

Quote of the Day – February 7 2013

“There’s never an easy route to the things that matter.”
― Charles de Lint

In the long run, what is it that matters? As cliche as it sounds, we’re all on a journey. Some might think it is to have the life we want to have while for others its a quest to simply survive. We like our challenges also, don’t we.  Any time it feels like things are coasting without a challenge we encounter some person or something or some situation that will throw a wrench into our coziness and show us we’re not quite there yet We throw ourselves at these challenges, occasionally feel beaten or battered by them or sometimes we score an easy win. Those easy wins are great for building confidence but they’re not where our greatest lessons come from. It’s those things and people that have the greatest potential for getting under our skin that hold the greatest lessons for us. It might take time to see the lessons, weeks or months but if we keep looking its there. Feeling gratitude towards these difficult teachers can be the greatest challenge.

Quote of the Day – February 6 2013

“I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. I said I didn’t know.”
― Mark Twain

I’ve been told that ‘I don’t know.’ is the most common honest answer in the english language. Yet admitting it seems so difficult.  Is it but one more crime to heap on the educational systems of the world or is it something deeper? I don’t know. What is it that we know for sure? Our names that is to say our identities? Yet how often do we surprise ourselves acting in ways, both good and bad that we never expected. I used to claim I knew so much. Now more and more often I see the things I am ignorant of. I must admit tho I find not knowing  to be FANTASTIC. Because as long as I don’t know, it means I am open to learning. Will this always be the case? I don’t know =)

Quote of the Day – February 5 2013

“A path is only a path, and there is no affront, to oneself or to others, in dropping it if that is what your heart tells you . . . Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself alone, one question . . . Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn’t it is of no use.”
― Carlos Castaneda

Choose the day’s new sign
it’s colour and its sigil
walk out on its path
and discover its truth
Is it true for you?
The signs will show the way
and if its truth doesn’t sound
the heart’s agreement
know that there are other ways
and feel free to take them.
Love guides and sometimes protects
compassion provides the lessons
either there or absent
along the way
Follow your heart your bliss and your wyrd
the council of the wise and that of the foolish too
for sometimes we need to explore the false
in order to know the real

How do we know whether or not our path is a path with heart? Listen. Chances are if you’re asking, it’s not. Never doubt your story.

Tarot Post – Three of Pentacles

Three of Pentacles (Work / Art)

Three of PentaclesThree of Pentacles (Revised) by G A Rosenberg

He Perfects his art.

Realizing inner visions

he then manifests

So hard I’ve worked
to learn my craft
endless hours where every mistake possible was made
Now the show
the lights, the glow
the people coming around to see
what new masterpiece the artist has designed
Yet still the art
flows through
and a new creation awaits

Story: The cabinet maker had spent years as an apprentice learning his trade. As a journeyman, he perfected it learning what artistic flourishes to put in and how to make function flow into a form that both utilized space and was pleasing to the eye. Now he was a master and people came from miles around to be wait-listed for his next project. Today tho, his work was to be shown as if for the first time. Never was any contract more important. The princess strode in and looked regally upon his newest creation. He held his breath as she inspected his work. He had spend weeks on this, wanting it to be perfect but knowing that it would mean nothing if she was displeased. Her eyes lit up. “I love this dollhouse daddy, thank you, it’s beautiful”. “You’re welcome princess”, he said and hugged her tightly.

In the tarot  the suit of Pentacles refers to the element of Earth and of practical matters such as work and partnerships of a business nature and of the home. They can also represent nature, the Earth itself.  Threes deal with maturity, accomplishment and transmission of the energy involved. In the three of Pentacles, that transmission of practical energy is work accomplished or having something to show for it. Any piece of art or craftsmanship not only reflects the work put into it but the work ,  learning and time that has gone into everything the artist or craftsman has ever done before. It used to feel strange to me that some of the art that had taken me the least amount of time to do gets some of the best responses from people. Until my partner said to me, “Did it take two hours or did it take fifty years?”

Astrological Correspondence – Mars in Capricorn – This energy is very goal-oriented.  Hard work is done willingly in pursuit of something that needs to be accomplished. This involves concentration and order in a creative fashion.

I Ching Correspondence – 13) Tung Jên “Fellowship with Men</h4>
_______
_______
_______

_______

The trigram of Heaven is over that of Flame.  The one weak line among the five strong shows flexibility within a strong order. In fellowship, there is great benefit if within a system, there can be some willingness to yield either for a better vision or to allow some creativity to show through.

In a reading the Three of Pentacles can refer to a time of learning and hard work paying off. It can denote recognition of effort and a feeling of accomplishment.

When it shows up reversed in a reading, it can represent a finished work that is mediocre. Something has been done to ‘get by’ rather than done with conscious effort. It may show that someone is not working to the best of their abilities
