Worlds and Words Compressed

“I think we are worlds compressed into human form.”
— Jeanette Winterson

Stars, worlds and words made flesh
and set into orbit
We are so much more than we believe
and oft so different too
Significant in our potential
more so than in what we present
both to ourselves and others.
To transcend form and function
to free the worlds, nay the stars that we are
is the aim
tho not if we lose sight of why we compressed ourselves here in the first place.
The lessons we came here to learn and the interactions we need to have.
Besides that purpose its all smoke and mirror games
we dream up to keep it interesting.

Funny, I misread Ms. Winterson’s quote originally saying that “we are words compressed into human form” and I rather liked that notion. We are all the word made flesh, the spirit cloaked in matter. We recreate ourselves with words all of the time, accruing stories and carrying them around like the Ancient Mariner and his albatross. Of course we have the freedom to change our stories at any time but not that primal word that we manifest. I tend to believe that that word is our purpose and on some level it is the quest of each of us to find it.

Please…

“Information is just bits of knowledge.
Knowledge is putting them together.
Wisdom is transcending them.”
— Ram Dass

Please let me be wise and not know it.
For in the knowing I may give up
what has brought me there.
Let me know the pain within
and transcend it
so that I can show others how to do it for themselves
Please Show me how to embrace this planet
and those who dwell here.
For what use are facts and figures?
what use is knowing
if one cannot grant solace?

Spirals Watched and Waking… A Consciousness Stream

“We are not going in circles, we are going upwards. The path is a spiral; we have already climbed many steps.”
― Hermann Hesse

I’ve done this before…trusted too much…didn’t try hard enough…lost my nerve and now the cycle repeats. Yet I am not back at the beginning. In truth none goes backwards. I have this cycle of experiences added to my wheelhouse and that may be enough to change how things turn out. No perfect circles exist in life, the spiral moves ever outwards. I too move with the spiral growing, changing, learning. I look down at where I was and I realize it anew. I look out at what is possible and I rise with hope, inspired.

In Darkness

“Anything that stands out in darkness becomes beautiful”
— Randall Wolfe

In pitch blackness I awoke
no sound no movement
a disquieting peace
broken by the sound of your breath
and the beating of my heart.
Still, I was still
yet blind and then
turning towards you
I saw your eyes and the curve of your face
and was enraptured
I felt your smile
as it mirrored mine
In moonlight or daylight you shine like the sun
but in the kiss of darkness
you become my world

Of Virgins, Brothels and Understanding

“Anyone who wants to know the human psyche will learn next to nothing from experimental psychology. He would be better advised to abandon exact science, put away his scholar’s gown, bid farewell to his study, and wander with human heart through the world. There, in the horrors of prisons, lunatic asylums and hospitals, in drab suburban pubs, in brothels and gambling-hells, in the salons of the elegant, the Stock Exchanges, socialist meetings, churches, revivalist gatherings and ecstatic sects, through love and hate, through the experience of passion in every form in his own body, he would reap richer stores of knowledge than text-books a foot thick could give him, and he will know how to doctor the sick with a real knowledge of the human soul.”
— Carl Jung

Can a virgin ever understand a brothel? He can come to know how the business works I suppose. He (or she) could come to understand the clientele, how the bookkeeping works, who has to be paid off and when and even know the workers by name. But to understand viscerally what really goes on, one has to plunge right in and experience the needs that are met and the physicality of the act involved.
Academia can be pretty dry. On the one hand a university education can teach and encourage critical thinking. On the other hand it can encourage a constant dissection of ideas without a visceral feel for whatever is being studied. It is easy to become so involved in critiquing the form an argument takes that the point of it gets lost. Analyzed and examined but not understood much like our poor virgin.
Sometimes the only way to fully understand an idea is to inhabit it and see how it fits. Otherwise we remain on the outside looking in and critiquing without getting the full gist.

Alchemy of Unwanted Emotions

“The alchemy of the dark emotions is a process that cannot be forced, but it can be encouraged by cultivating certain basic emotional skills. The three basic skills are attending to, befriending, and surrendering to emotions that make us uncomfortable… When you are open to your heart’s pain and to your body’s experience of it, emotions flow in the direction of greater healing, balance, and harmony.”
— Miriam Greenspan

Why do I feel this way? I don’t want to. I hate this frustration. I shouldn’t feel this way. Yet I do. How often do we find ourselves going in these loops? We feel bad or angry or sad and then beat ourselves up about it. The truth is that in happy times we seldom monitor our feelings. We are usually do busy enjoying them. Our so called negative emotions can often teach us a lot more about our shadow selves. All we have to do is be open to feeling them. That doesn’t mean wallow but give them their proper space and time. By knowing that not only can we feel deeply but seeing what set them off, we can gain valuable insight into the areas of our life that we have not faced. Soon enough they will leave. Very few emotions can be sustained for very long and in their passing quite often they can leave behind gifts.

Totemic Spirits

“Those are the voices of my brothers, darling; I love the company of wolves.”
― Angela Carter

Wolf my brother in wildness
walks down the road
into the forest
He misses very little
He hungers for knowledge
and protects.
Coyote, my trickster teacher
prowls in the street
Lean thin and smiling
He shows me his jests
and guides.
Raven, ah raven
communicates news
in the nighttime
He flys freely
Spider weaves her web
in my doorway
Beautiful geometries
teach me to plan
Totemic messengers
show me the way
towards magical thinking
