A Man of Pure Restrictive Conviction

“Don’t be intimidated by other people’s opinions. Only mediocrity is sure of itself, so take risks and do what you really want to do.”
— Paulo Coelho

Oh so confident in your views
reality lies down at your feet
yet you beg before it
convinced you know of its treat
and still in giant stride
you feel no remorse
at tearing down all others
because you are right of course
yet then the silence spins around
your tower crashes to the ground
in your facade there is a crack
you’ve found some knowledge that you lack
and so you rebuild your crumpled frame
and in your course become convinced
that you hold the key once more
and on such scant evidence!
Would you hold the secret key
and jump away from pure conviction
then know truth’s inconsistency
and certainty’s restriction.

Recreating a Legendary History

“History records man’s perceptions of the “truth” and these perceptions are firmly distorted, as anyone knows who has researched historical sources.
On the other hand Legend and Myth preserve the essence of the truth. This is validated by the similarity of world legends that persist in all parts of the world and in all cultures and religions. ”
-Christopher S. Hyatt

We honour our pasts in strange ways
tho we remember it not
after all it is not the truth that lives on
and facts are easily distorted
It is story that lingers.
Everyone knows the myths of their country and culture and connect to it on a visceral level more than they ever could dry historical facts.
If you want history to be remembered a certain way despite how it may or may not have happened, the easiest way is to make your version of history legendary. Have clear heroes and villains. Remember everything the heroes did in the most positive light possible and everything the antagonists did in the most negative. Make it romantic and sexy and you too will have created a new legendary history that will be taught in school textbooks and sworn to be the way it was.
I’m sure some examples easily come to mind.

Cheese Gratings

“I should think that many of our poets, the honest ones, will confess to having no manifesto. It is a painful confession but the art of poetry carries its own powers without having to break them down into critical listings. I do not mean that poetry should be raffish and irresponsible clown tossing off words into the void. But the very feeling of a good poem carries its own reason for being… Art is its own excuse, and it’s either Art or it’s something else. It’s either a poem or a piece of cheese.”
—Charles Bukowski

Sometimes it is good to throw my words into the void. It is the one time when there is no echo so I don’t have to hear the same distortions that seem to plague me when I speak to others or even carry words into my own head. Indeed things that enter the void tend to disappear for good so what better place is there to get rid of things one no longer wants. Oddly enough tho since the void is also the fount of creativity, what comes back from such an exchange is often worth so much more. Indeed it may be the best conceptual recycling and renewal program ever. Yet it has such a bad rap tho I guess most people are somewhat weary of the whole losing things forever idea. Yet the risks are worth it

Survival Art

“Some people survive and talk about it. Some people survive and go silent. Some people survive and create. Everyone deals with unimaginable pain in their own way, and everyone is entitled to that, without judgement. So the next time you look at someone’s life covetously, remember…you may not want to endure what they are enduring right now, at this moment, whilst they sit so quietly before you, looking like a calm ocean on a sunny day. Remember how vast the ocean’s boundaries are. Whilst somewhere the water is calm, in another place in the very same ocean, there is a colossal storm.”
— Nakita Gill

We all are survival artists. We make it through each day of our lives no matter what nonsense we get up to and we go to sleep facing the next one whether we are ready or not. Everyone has their share of pain, some more than others tis true but like any art some of us are more talented than others and can do a lot more with what they are given. Please remember when things get tough and you don’t know how you’ll survive any longer, to look back and see what you have managed to come through so far and know that there is still more to come.
