New Beginnings

“The artist is always beginning. Any work of art which is not a beginning, an invention, a discovery is of little worth.”
— Ezra Pound

Everything is a first step towards a greater whole and every moment both a beginning and an ending. Even if we’re well on our way towards a given goal, the next step we take will be the first one on the rest of the way there. This is both reassuring and terrifying for it means no matter how far we’ve come, the journey is always beginning. Each achievement leads to the next one and we can never fully rest on our laurels because we have so far to go.

Quote of the Day – December 31 2011

“Heroes know that things must happen when it is time for them to happen. A quest may not simply be abandoned; unicorns may go unrescued for a long time, but not forever; a happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.”
–Peter S Beagle

Once again a quote has surprised me. I went looking for quotes on endings, perhaps one that would bring us to a beginning the snake Ourborus forever eating his own tail, or is that tale? Instead I find this amazing quote by Beagle that suggests that the story does not end but will be perpetually in progress.
How do I reconcile this with my belief that every moment can signify a new direction, a new chapter, a new beginning? Need I try? Some stories have the habit of taking wilder shifts than others.
To those of you who follow my blog, who have enjoyed the art, the writing and perhaps even these mini essays, thank you. May this next year find you joyful and healthy and may there be much new art, new jokes, and new stories that we can share.
