Quote of the Day – October 10 2012

“I’d like to repeat the advice that I gave you before, in that I think you really should make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. ”
— Jon Krakauer

To me this quote has (at least) two meanings. There is an external one that talks about changing one’s circumstances and taking chances and travelling. There is also an  internal one that deals with changing ones landscape and habits… looking at the old sun in a totally new way That I quite like..

Quote of the Day – September 16 2012

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them ; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like”
–Lao Tsu

;

Sometimes I believe that the resistance to change that so many of us seem to have to be a game of sorts. I have seen nothing in life that stays the same. Small incremental changes, even ones that seem irrelevant at the time until we find ourselves on the surface at least as vastly different people doing vastly different things in very different ways than we ever thought possible. If we seem from a long view to be so consistently inconsistent than how can we expect anyone or anything else to stay static. By embracing change and engaging in the dance we grow and flourish. By trying to stand our ground and make of ourselves a fortress we lose.

Quote of the Day – July 16 2012

“Sometimes I get lonesome for a storm. A fullblown storm where everything changes.”
—Joan Baez

After a week of talking about identity which followed a week of talking about freedom, I was not expecting to be talking around another ‘theme’ that quickly. Tho its interesting that the last two quotes that called to me were both talking about various kinds of change. We’ll have to see where this goes.

I can identify with Joan Baez’s desire for a storm that changes everything on so many levels. On a personal level, I want a storm that will shake me out of areas where I feel I’ve grown complacent and motivate me to do things I have stalled on. On a political level I want a storm of consciousness that will awaken and empower people to demand the right to self-governance that we have lost. On a mass consciousness level I want a storm to arise within our hearts to make us think of ourselves on a species or universal level FIRST before either the personal or tribal levels so many of us seem stuck on.

Please rain in my soul
storm and rage within its core
sunlit rebirth dawns.

Quote of the Day – October 2 2011

“God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change
Courage to change the one I can change,
And wisdom to know it’s me.”
–author unknown

One of my favourite quotes from this last year. I have been spending today in a kind of fog. Realizing that when changes seem to be afoot, that it makes sense to decide on the form these changes will take. What’s the lyrics to that song by Seals and Crofts? Oh yeah, “lift us up, always up” To me, that means as much as possible steering the changes so that they go in the direction of greater consciousness, greater love, understanding and compassion and realizing that yes a lot of the time that does take conscious decision. Not to fall into fear based patterns or gossip. In other words, it feels like time that I allow myself to grow in ways I haven’t before.Still one step at a time and each day brings greater understanding or at least the opportunity for it.
