A Thousand Dreams

“A thousand Dreams within me softly burn:
From time to time my heart is like some oak
Whose blood runs golden where a branch is torn.”
— Arthur Rimbaud

Sometimes dreams whisper. They sneak in as memories or relatively normal conversations and then take strange turns. Sometimes they pop into my head fully formed as I get a glimpse of possible futures that I immediately want to make happen. Some become nightmares both in terms of fears that they bring out and in terms of events that happen subsequent to them. Nightmares can whisper also tho as little insecurities and doubts that echo and keep on repeating until I accept that they are there and let them pass through. The best dreams for me tho are the contagious ones where the more they are shared, the more people start dreaming and acting on those dreams. They are melodies that long for a chorus. Dreams of freedom and dreams of self-direction that fill me with hope. Of course there are silly dreams as well where someone hands me a spaghetti pizza or boiled eggs but I leave those to others to interpret.

Dream Voyaging

“We wanderers, ever seeking the lonelier way, begin no day where we have ended another day; and no sunrise finds us where sunset left us. Even while the earth sleeps we travel. We are the seeds of the tenacious plant, and it is in our ripeness and our fullness of heart that we are given to the wind and are scattered.”
— Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

We travel by night
outside the form
inside the dream
and learn in new classrooms
in worlds and thoughts
that daylight would never show us.
We meet with others
friends, strangers
some we cannot understand
yet experience is the key
we continue on
knowing that it will
come in day’s travels
the knowledge we’ve gained
the toll we’ve paid
in night’s voyaging
as we find our way.

Dreams of Co-Created Love

“Sometimes you wonder, in an interconnected universe, who’s dreaming who?”
― Grant Morrison

I dreamt you last night
a complement for my longing
someone enough like my differences
that we could speak for hours
and different enough from my likes
to keep the magick going.
You dreamt me
a shadow of your desire
reaching out into three D or more
a refuge for your heart
We awoke alone
the sheets thrown about
and the memory of sweet sour taste
in our mouth
waiting for the next time we dreamed together
yet who created who?

A Dream Within…

“All human beings are also dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together.”
― Jack Kerouac

After years of little to no dream recall, I have started remembering and recording my dreams. So many of them in the past few weeks have been about resolving my past with people and places I have not seen in decades. This has provided healing in quite an amazing way. Perhaps the healing has only been one way and yet I believe that we do share connections and if I have been able to find this sense of closure hopefully the current is set so that they may as well.
I love the act of dreaming. I love finding myself doing something or being with people and then waking up and finding myself back in my bed with two loved ones snoring softly besides me. My dreams have provided me answers and occasionally glimpses of future situations that I may find myself in. There is even a tell when that is happening. I will have a conversation that will happen in the future and then things will get absurdly surreal. Not that that doesn’t happen in life itself tho this is more in a Dalian sense of the terms.
I wish good dreaming and good rests to all who read this and a recommendation to keep a notepad and pen or an iPad next to your bed and capture your dreams upon waking.

Inspired by Everything

“Ideas come from everything”
― Alfred Hitchcock

What inspires you? Can you surrender to your imagination and grasp at the fireflies of ideas that blink in and out of consciousness? Can you listen to the voice of deity and become enflamed with new ideas? Can you climb a mountain and walk in the hills, carry a question and hear the answers that come? Can you still the wild fury of your thoughts and be still to the flame that lies within? Can you see shapes within flowers or hear the music in the laughter of old women talking?
Inspiration has come to me through all of these things. It would come more often if only I could learn to let go and be still more, to listen with my heart to the stillness, beauty and pain in the world. Every day I come closer…

Dreaming Shadows

“We must never stop dreaming. Dreams provide nourishment for the soul, just as a meal does for the body.”
― Paulo Coelho

I dream myself
in different ways
and so shape my path.
Inconsistent?
Perhaps but in a constant way
I pick and choose who I will be
yet imperfectly
for who can fully live a dream
when faced with shadowed reality
what better way to deal with shadows
then cast them in the light
exposing the hidden drama
long locked away
the more of me exposed
the more that I can be

Twigging

“A word is a bud attempting to become a twig. How can one not dream while writing? It is the pen which dreams. The blank page gives the right to dream.”
― Gaston Bachelard

Growth
Dream to word to dream again
Containment, edit, reframe
shape, add water, dream bigger
write more…let the flow develop
Sentences to Paragraphs
the dream made word
the word made thought
and the thought expanded.
The page, having lost its virginity
opens willingly, its innocence taken
with any luck though its integrity maintained.
Still expansion and expansion, buildup and release
flow through until full expression occurs
and the full flower of page’s potential
becomes seen and shared.

Manifesting the Dream

“If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform a million realities.”
― Maya Angelou

I reflect often how lucky I am. I have seen so many dreams come true and know so many people who can make it happen. One group of people I know have taken great strides in helping people with disabilities determine their own lives, working at jobs that are worthwhile and adding to their communities. I know more who are doing their bits to make life just a little bit more healthier and safer in third-world nations. Others who every day by realizing their dreams, which started as a fantasy in one person’s mind make life better for so many others.
This lifts me when I am feeling down and believe that a) I don’t make a difference and b) the things that I hope for are hopeless and c) that I don’t have the power to affect others. More and more I realize I do and can and what a gift it is. Even in minor ways, when someone tells me that something I wrote impacted on them in even a minor way it feels so empowering. What is art but dreams created?
In one of my favourite plays “Sunday in the Park with George” by Stephen Sondheim, Georges Seraut the artist sings about being lost in his work, and how people misunderstand what he is doing. In the end, he says “Look I made a hat where there never was a hat.” It’s all about seeing what isn’t there, working to put it there and thus transforming reality. Nothing is more powerful than our dreams when we are willing to work to manifest them.

Walking Under Your Starry Sky

“Reach high, for stars lie hidden in you. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.”
― Rabindranath Tagore

Last night I dreamt
I walked under your starry sky
Awestruck lit by your being
the dimmest corners of my soul revealed
I felt my heart roused
and looked within
and you were there as well.
I sang you golden memories
and melted in your being
Tonight let me be your sky
and we will dream together
new beginnings as old as time
Eternal memories yet to be written.
