The Fire That Comes From Cold Embers

“The poet, therefore, is truly the thief of fire.
He is responsible for humanity, for animals even; he will have to make sure his visions can be smelled, fondled, listened to; if what he brings back from beyond has form, he gives it form; if it has none, he gives it none. A language must be found…of the soul, for the soul and will include everything: perfumes, sounds colors, thought grappling with thought”
― Arthur Rimbaud

My heart speaks silently
tho sometimes it screams
in its search for meaning
for connection
stuck in its babel tower
along with so many others
crying in its own separate tongue
What does it take to understand?
Where is the commonality?
Without arms I reach out
and pull back
If I have fire to share
than what cold embers
shall I encourage to glow?
I have done this before
and watched an inferno develop
I have had these moments
If we can not understand
than we can be together in incomprehension
Connection is Made.

Into Darkness, Towards Light

“I said to my soul, be still, and let the dark come upon you.”
— T.S. Eliot

In the darkness
I found comfort
shadows reflected from the dying light
the waves of a distant shore lapping
my inner light shone more brightly there
caressed by black flame
amid the coiled stillness.
Mysteries revealed themselves
and wisdom gained
in chthonic realms
my will was illuminated
In my rebirth I discovered
my own salvation
and a new light beckoned me on.

Focus on the Future

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”
― Dan Millman

I’ve given up second-guessing
and regret
they’ve always weighed me down.
I can’t change the past
now would I.
I’ll let it slide
into its own detritus
providing mulch for future growth.
Instead focusing on the now and
setting my intent on what’s to come.
With clarity I’ll move forward
and my steps will be sure.

A Child of the Green (Redux)

My home is the growing land
the dark forest has sustained me
and it is all that I have known.
I protect this land and all that lies within
I welcome those who can know me
the ones who won’t despoil
Others can only know my wrath
without seeing me at all.

Sisyphean Lessons

“Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.”
— John Cotton Dana

Sisyphus watches the stone roll down
I watch my plans unravel
Another lesson gone astray
I stand naked
with my naivety hanging out
I thought I could teach
what I had learned
what I had thought
what I had dreamed
yet so little did I know
My teachings taste like ashes
as my students went astray
Back to the basics
back to the road
back to the books
It’s time for this lad to return to school.

Comfort’s Curse

“…Things get broken, and sometimes they get repaired, and in most cases, you realize that no matter what gets damaged, life rearranges itself to compensate for your loss, sometimes wonderfully.”
— Hanya Yanagihara

Leave the old behind
the past, the broken
the things that no longer serve
If we cling to old memories
new ones cannot be made.
Free yourself from burdens
unburden yourself from care
New roads forever beckon
new songs await to be sung
comfort can be a curse
as it keeps us in its grasp
long past time to go
let it be a mere way station
between adventures and lessons
and paths
Face the unknown future with a laugh
that continues to unfold.

A Judgement of Vampires

“The place to improve the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there.”
― Robert M. Pirsig

The din of a thousand words echoing
decrying each other’s faults
criticizing each other’s actions
feeding on the blood they sense in the wind
on the water
at their feet.
Yet in their mirrorless existences
for they cannot see their reflections
and will not reflect on their thoughts
except when echoed by others.
Unkind? Unjust? Unfair?
Perhaps only human
for am I not committing the sin
by naming it
by blaming it
by shaming it?
I will uncover my looking glass
and gaze into the water
and reflect on myself
and change from within
and evolve from without
and resolve to be kind

A Rumpled Alchemist

“I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value.”
― Hermann Hesse

I take the dross of pain and joy
I plan to weave tonight
Decomposing experience
putrefying by the wayside
waiting to see what may arise
out of the decay
I weave the remains
a golden thread
in which I shall cloak myself
with understanding
as compassion is born
for those whom it may fit.
Each night I weave
yearning for something pure
yet they still can’t guess my name.

Observing the Wonders

“Observe the wonders as they occur around you.
Don’t claim them. Feel the artistry moving through and be silent.”
― Kahlil Gibran

The air still moves
without my words
The stars and moon
shine above me
with kittens playing
in the moonbeams
There are flowers
and people feeling
everything.
I might feel sorrow
or anger yet
before the thousand
wonders of any moment
my feelings
are silenced.
Would that I could hold the awe
and hold the moment
and hold my feelings
yet in the next moment
things will resume
until the next time
the moment catches me
unaware..

Dancing Through the Storm

“You can dance in the storm. Don’t wait for the rain to be over before because it might take too long. You can can do it now. Wherever you are, right now, you can start, right now; this very moment.”
― Israelmore Ayivor

The winds howl fiercely
and the water pours
droplets trickle down me
as I take my first steps
hesitantly, I pull forward and turn
The lightning flashes
and I leap
The mood is dramatic
yet still I am restrained
A battle between fear and lust
of the excitement
with just an element
of finding my place
I start spinning
The sky opens
The thunder cracks and I grow bolder
with leaps and falls that
the night itself envies
I dance the storm
in all its wonder
and will make it through the rain
