Artist’s Task

“The artist’s task is to save the soul of mankind; and anything less is a dithering while Rome burns. If artists cannot find the way, then the way cannot be found.”
-Terence McKenna

We’re all artists, our mediums may differ but we all create our lives from our imagination using the tools and materials at hand. Some of us give up way too easily leaving designs half finished or we spend our lives searching for others who will complete our designs for us. Some of us finger paint and let our designs go willy-nilly. Don’t get me wrong for this method can produce beauty and fractal patterns never before seen. Some of us tho, partly by design and partly by taking advantage of patterns that we see as they develop, create true beauty that inspires. Our lives leap off the page or off the board and influence others to see what they can truly do and become.

The Battles Won Behind Your Forehead….

“Your battles inspired me – not the obvious material battles but those that were fought and won behind your forehead.”
― James Joyce

To the young mother
working two jobs
and still finding time
to give your baby a smile
and so much love
while taking a class or two at a time.
sacrificing sleep
for the promise that your daughter
may have it a bit easier

To the young man
on the street
working day labor
who’s parents kicked him out
because of who he loved
or dreamt of loving
He manages to resist
disease and habit
believing it will get better
if he makes it so

To those who search within
who know that there’s more than this
and work towards achieving it
To those who go without food or a home
yet don’t give into despair
To those who wake to nightmares
yet still find themselves able to dream
Thank you for teaching me
love, courage, hope and tenacity.

I have been privileged in my life to have known and seen many varieties of experience. I have seen so many people who have had it tough in every way possible and yet managed to still go on ever hoping for more. I have seen people who have struggled (and thrived) with physical and mental disabilities  or mental health issues. People poor and in need or rich and in need of hugs both inner and outer. It amazes and inspires me our ability to persist despite almost any adversity.

Quote of the Day – March 25 2013

“Live life fully while you’re here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You’re going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.”
― Anthony Robbins

I read this and I just want to say YES. How often in my life have I second guessed myself or stopped myself from doing something because I was worried either about what someone else might think or that I would not do it correctly? How many experiences have I avoided not because I did not want to experience them but out of fear or avoidance.  Honestly tho, I’ve let myself do a lot and I’ve made huge mistakes and can look at them now and laugh from the other side.

I can guarantee that not only myself but everyone reading this will make several mistakes between now and when we go on. That’s awesome. Mistakes are there so that we can plumb the depths of our ignorance and learn. They are necessary parts of our journey and we should rejoice in them. They may suck at the time particularly the ones where we or others who we care about get hurt but in the mutual healing there is much that can be learned. These mistakes are part of the human journey and wow am I grateful for that.

I’m going to leave off with two questions tonight that I’d love to hear answers from. What inspires you? What feeds you and allows you to go further faster? What is one thing you would like to try that you haven’t yet?

Quote of the Day – March 24 2013

“Do you have any advice for your readers?”

“Lead the life that’s yours instead of faking someone else’s.”
― Sandy Nathan

That’s some amazing advice from Sandy Nathan.  For so many years I felt insecure about being myself around people. I would find role models, usually peers and model myself after them in how I spoke and my general demeanour. I had the hardest time understanding why every couple of months while I was doing that I would have an almost total break down and descent into a pretty black mood. My authentic self was rattling at the door of the cage I had put it in trying to break free. I had some amazing adventures along the way and each time as I would loose another adapted persona, more and more of who I really am emerged.
No one can hide from themselves and the world forever. We can try to pretend to be someone else (a teacher, a performer we admire, a religious leader).  We can even try to become one of the many identity tags we take on (lawyer, doctor, catholic, jew, gay, female) and be an exemplary cliche of how we believe that someone with that identity should act. If it is not authentic, it will fall apart in time. That’s ok, whenever that happens, our real selves get closer. After all, its not only someone else’s life that we can’t get away with faking, it is our own as well.

Quote of the Day – March 3 2013

“Man is so made that when anything fires his soul, impossibilities vanish.

~ Jean de La Fontaine

Hey man hate to bother you but I got this need
I can’t seem to get by without it
I remember when I could take it or leave it
but now I can’t make it through the day…
So you got … or can you help me get…
some inspiration?
Used to be I was like everyone else you see
working, playing, watching tv
but then a friend said “Hey check this out”
and showed me a sunset
and I was hooked
before I knew it I was listening to music
even without WORDS
and seeking out new ideas
Man that stuff was EVERYWHERE!!!!
I went for it all
whether natural out in the woods
or store bought
my bookseller became my connection man
These days it feels a bit harder tho
So man, whatcha got?

Quote of the Day – January 15 2013

“Without inspiration, we’re all like a box of matches that will never be lit.”
― David Archuleta

What inspires you? I find myself inspired by so many things. Oh not all the time and luckily not all at once (a book of matches that gets lit all at once isn’t of use for very long). I get inspired by new ideas and by spirit. I get inspired by nature, by books and by music. Meditation brings inspiration as does art… Luckily this book of matches seems infinite and self renewing.. Working on this blog provides its own inspiration…as do all of you. Perhaps I become inspired easily, I travel among the winds buffeted by the different things I encounter each day. Not all inspiration is happy but all of it is worthwhile.

Quote of the Day – December 16 2012

“As you get older it is harder to have heroes, but it is sort of necessary.”
― Ernest Hemingway

Harder? I seem to find heroes everywhere I go. Oh they may seem mundane to most, insane to some but for me heroes, nonetheless. The single mother who has worked to raise her children and provide for them who advocates for the one with a disability. The man who after a long period of homelessness starts a non-profit to help others and to show others how capable they are of helping. The musicians and artists who turn down prestigious gigs in countries with horrible records of human rights. The teacher who hides her first grade students away before a gunman comes in and kills her. Anyone out there who offers hope to another. People who show the beauty of their being in astonishing ways big or small. I have many heroes and discover new ones every day. New stars appear in my sky nightly.

Quote of the Day – December 9 2012

“There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke.”
― Vincent van Gogh

Who inspires you? At who’s spiritual  fire do you warm yourself knowing that with them you will never freeze? Do you inspire yourself? Do you hope to inspire others? We ALL have fire in our soul. At times it may feel like an extinguishing candle but at other times, sometimes very singular times but at least sometimes, we know ourselves to hold a blowtorch, just waiting for a chance to inspire others and definitely at the very least we all have the ability to self inspire ourselves to never before dreamed of heights.

Quote of the Day – July 25 2012

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”
― Paulo Coelho, Alchemist

Poetry in art
art in poetry
Beings and patterns request expression
and I do my best
rhymes, rhythms, colour form
They all spin through me
a poor man’s Rumplestilskin
if not spinning gold
than pretty dross
and floss

If sometime beauty is formed
or an idea that you take home
then it is not i
but the one who spins me
on the universal loom
in love with love and through love
part of the eternal tapestry
