Fear Knot

“Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.”
― Jim Morrison

Does our fear tie us in knots? If it does are we like a shoelace or other knotted chord with one central fear that once unraveled and exposed automatically make the rest much easier to deal with. If so then it would be of benefit to explore and find what that fear is and slowly take it apart. After that we deal with the next biggest fear knot (fear not?) and so on until eventually just like a child’s shoe lace that at first seems hopelessly snarled and tangled we end with just a neat tie…

Feelings Light and Dark

“People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality; their feelings most of all. People talk about how great love is, but that’s bullshit. Love hurts. Feelings are disturbing. People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous. How can they deal with love if they’re afraid to feel? Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they’re wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It’s all in how you carry it. That’s what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you’re letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain.”
― Jim Morrison

Do you know what it is to be frightened by what you feel? To sense the opposite emotions, their shadows, hovering somewhere close behind. New agers hide it by chanting “Love and Light, Love and Light” yet would they be so eager to invoke light if they weren’t put off by darkness. It’s ok to feel and acknowledge fear, anger and sorrow. They do tend to be part of our makeup whether or not we do. By acknowledging it all, by accepting it all, the uneasiness subsides. In pitch dark, the least amount of light shows out almost blindingly. Light casts shadows. Very often we earn our pain and need not fear it. We may have to do without it some day but for now it is ours.

Universal Snake Wisdom

“I’ve always liked reptiles. I used to see the universe as a mammoth snake, and I used to see all the people and objects, landscapes, as little pictures in the facets of their scales. I think peristaltic motion is the basic life movement. Swallowing,”
–Jim Morrison

Ol Matthew the gospel writer had JC telling his apostles “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” Indeed there is wisdom in the rising of the coiled snake as we activate our chakras. There is also wisdom in how a snake sheds its skin. May we all be as open to losing that which no longer suits us. May we learn a snake’s sense of timing and understand its rhythm as we awaken.
I’ve never quite understood people’s fear or dislike of reptiles. When I was a kid at summer camp, I would end up bringing frogs and snakes home as hopeful pets. I was fascinated by their movements and their ability to in my mind focus on what they considered essential. Years later when I learned how snakes fed, I gained awareness and understanding of how life fed on life. Funny how lessons from our youth deepen and gain new facets as we get older.

The Fear of Depths

“Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.”
― Jim Morrison

Earlier today, I was challenged by a friend who remarked that I never talk about my own fears and that I stay emotionally safe and comfortable in most of my entries here. At first I reacted the way I normally react when challenged. “I don’t have time for this crap right now.” I didn’t send that reply because I have come to realize when I have that response, it normally means that something has hit home and I need to look at it. When I did a realization started dawning and I realized that I have a fear of expressing and probing some of my deeper emotions and what a block it has been.
When I was younger I used to lash out at people and I was intuitive enough to hone in on just what would cause them the most pain.. and would use it on them. It cost me friendships and hurt my relationships with my family… Very few people want to examine their pain. I learned all kinds of neat ways of avoiding feeling things as deeply because i couldn’t handle hurting people. I’ve learned other ways of distancing even while pretending to draw closer so that i don’t have to feel the intensity of their emotions as well.
Most of my closest relationships have been with people who have reinforced this emotional denial mostly by reacting strongly when they sensed disapproval or disagreement from me. It became easier to mask the emotion rather than express it.
In the past years, I have become a lot more open and expressive. If Pandora’s box hasn’t been thrown open, the lid has been raised and I’ve been looking deeper into it. I have found that I can express myself in a way that’s both open, realizing another’s weakness but healing, expressing it in a way that can be resolved. The journey continues.

Quote of the Day – July 2 2012

““The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.”
― Jim Morrison

I am the rewritten song
taken from a melody
written long ago
adapted for modern times
charged with modern crimes
yet totally my own.

I am the movie
based on a book
taken from a legend
told around a long ago campfire
yet still myself
no matter how many changes ensue.
