Night’s Crossroads

“The darkness is your mother; she behooves reverence, since the mother is dangerous. She has power over you, since she gave birth to you. Honor the darkness as the light, and you will illumine your darkness.”
— Carl Gustav Jung

Night moves in the crossroads
The past day meets the future at midnight
bringing the sounds of unknown danger
Shadows move and blend with our own
Somewhere in the distance
lovers moan as their dance
reaches a new height.
Hecate has her tribute
as does Artemis.
I will let go of the past
but not its lessons
and meet the future without fear
but with respect as a new moment begins

Nocturnal Rambling

“Acquainted with the Night

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain—and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.”
― Robert Frost

This poem speaks for I know what it is to walk in my night. The shadows long and the moon holding riddles with a hazy mist around everything. Nothing is quite clear yet I will not give into sadness or despair. I will walk it out and see what I will and perhaps find answers that will stand out. Each vision teaches me something when I see them even if quite what is not clear. There will be time enough to meditate on it. If no visions arise then I will enjoy the quiet mystery, the empty streets and the echoing footsteps. Inevitably for both the world and myself the morning will come. I say this not without regret for there is something in me that needs that nighttime stillness.

Quote of the Day – September 23 2012

You can’t stand up to the night until you understand what’s hiding in its shadows.
–Charles De Lint

Of late I’ve become more comfortable with my shadows. Everyone has them, these parts of ourselves that we try to repress, hold back. We become whole as we learn to accept our shadows, ask them in for a cup of tea, have long conversations with why they do the things they do and why we resist them and dance with them. Finally with any luck we may learn to integrate them. Of course there will still be shadows cast but fewer and fainter. Only when we resist our shadows do we run the risk of them biting us in the tail.

On a different note, today we started cleaning out our bookshelves, 30 boxes donated and counting. Saying goodbye to some old friends, well not goodbye as such, many of the characters I’ve internalized. There are a few that I have long conversations with but the covers that once contained them have gone to new homes. It is a cleansing of sorts.

Night time…

“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day. ”
~Vincent Van Gogh

Mother Night folds me to her breast
caresses my being in shades of sleep
The day has drained me
and in her dark being
I will find myself replenished.

Shadows walking through my soul
Shadows caressing me in my bed
whisper lullabies in my ears
and bring me dreaming home
