Quote of the Day – August 27 2012

“Happiness consists in realizing it is all a great strange dream”
― Jack Kerouac

By great, of course, Kerouac was not speaking of a qualitative judgement but of size and importance, a dream filled with awe and sometimes mundanity but filled to the brim with faces, reflections of ourselves that sometimes appear strange, locations that change faster than we realize and sometimes faster than we feel we can adjust to and a sense of unreality that comes and goes with startling regularity. I don’t feel alone in perceiving it this way. Still when I decide I’m going to surf the waves that come my way, immerse myself in the dream while realizing that’s what it is… happiness and its wonderfully wise older sister joy can ensue… Feeling this and knowing this is a gift of the universe. Tho like most gifts it tends to come to those to whom it belonged to already… Tho I feel at the same time it is everyone’s birthright.

Llama with beautiful Eyes

Quote of the Day. -August 19 2012

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see. ”
–Henry David Thoreau.

Do I see my son talking back and being cynical or do I see a young man somewhat insecure asserting his independence for the first time?
Do we see people trying to be better than they were or do we see them fall short?
How do we see ourselves? Do we see our failures, out successes or a combination of both?
Do we see the beauty inherent in even the most grotesque of people and events or do we only look at the ugliness?
What is it we want to see. Our choices make us who we are.
Blessings, G

Quote of the Day – July 8 2012

“If you understood everything I said, you’d be me”
― Miles Davis

My first thought when typing this quote was “or perhaps telepathic” but thats not quite it. Even if we could read each other’s minds and know what we meant, it would take years of knowledge and experience in order to understand (or innerstand as a  few of my friends would have it) from where the emotional content of what I said arose. We could understand the content but not the source.

Perhaps that is how it should be. If we are, as I suspect a good deal of the time, the universes way of understanding itself then perhaps it should be at least as difficult as self-understanding is for us. Perhaps as well, understanding may be a goal that we always approach but never quite reach, much as grasping absolute truth while in the physical body. For if we do contain multitudes and universes within us, absolute universal truth and the heart of another may not be that far different.

Quote of the Day – March 7 2012

A man’s growth is seen in the successive choirs of his friends.
–Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have two friends who live here in the UK who I’ve known for three years. I and them have seen each other go through many changes. Last year I felt privileged to attend their wedding. Tonight I got to meet them for the first time. I love the ways the internet has added to my life. Discovering friends and loved ones who share common interests and developing friendships that in many cases are deeper than any I’ve built where I live. Not to mention the fact that without the net my partner and I would never have developed the relationship that we have and Zev would have had a very different life.

And so…
Today my mother went into a hospice. I had been there in Florida for the past week with my family, watching her slowly deteriorate. Now at least she will be made comfortable. Even tho I realize that it is merely the body that dies, a setting aside of clothes that no longer fit and that soon she will be much happier and free of physical pain, saying goodbye or even abientot has been harder, even than I thought.

Beautiful Sunset After Rainy Day

Seduced by the beauty
Of a fire-lit sky
Reflection pink
on the water
I sit here
as my spirit sails
In wonderment.
I’ve been taught
To live in truth and walk in beauty
Amazing aspirations
I appreciate how far I’ve come
Yet my journey has barely begun
Can’t wait to see what happens next
And yet feel no rush.
I love this
and the life, world and being that have
brought me here
