Keep Your Arms and Legs Inside the Car at all Times

“The best way out is always through.”
― Robert Frost

Have you ever found yourself in the midst of a situation (whether it be friendship, job or romantic entanglement) that you knew was not going to work and that you did not want to be there no matter what and you just wished that you could back out of it gracefully? Unfortunately in those types of situations (life lessons from the universe) it is impossible to leave without entangling oneself deeper. This has happened to me many times. Each time I saw it as a ride, an attraction that I bought the ticket for and paid the only coin we really have for life experience, my attention and so I might as well enjoy it. Like any amusement park ride I knew that it would be of limited duration and that eventually it would come to an end and I could go on knowing that having experienced it once, I need never do so again. At least I wouldn’t have to experience that particular ride. Life tho is a series of overlapping rides some of which we enjoy, some of which make us nauseous. We see them through. We just have to remember to hold on tight and wait for them to end.

Just Desert

“They cannot scare me with their empty spaces
Between stars—on stars where no human race is.
I have it in me so much nearer home
To scare myself with my own desert places.”
― Robert Frost

Do we all carry different territories within us? Do we have the oft-traveled city streets crowded where one aspect melts into another and we can easily lose site of ourselves given all the different opportunities to be someone at least slightly different? Are there rural areas where life is abundant and we find quiet peace while we grow and know that we are not afraid of hard work as long as we can see the result spreading out in front of us. Do I have inside me a suburb where everything is pre-fab and the same outwardly placid inwardly chaotic face is shown to all. I believe I contain all of those but deep within me as well are the desert places.
I believe we’ve all experienced the desert inside of us at least once. The places that we would call empty tho in reality they are teaming with life, tho its a bit subtler and wilder. Here we are stripped down to our essentials and there is nowhere to hide. We find every ounce of ugliness inside us but also every ounce of will we have to survive. I can handle the ordeal of the desert tho I will never take it for granted for there I find myself.

Quote of the Day – August 25 2012

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. ”
— Robert Frost

I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to use this quote. In ways it reflects my life more than most. Not that I have actively sought the road less traveled as much as that has been where my footsteps have fallen. Somehow the travelled roads have always felt more constricting. Still in reality each of our roads tho they may cross have only been travelled once and forged each step of the way. Even when we tell ourselves, “ah this is the road of my ancestors” or “I follow in my parent’s footsteps” in reality the different times and circumstances change things. The footprints from the past get washed away either by tides rolling in and out or by the dust of paths crossed.

Funny I have met many people who see choice or free will as being an illusion. From my perspective anytime we complain about lack of choice we are kidding ourselves. There are always choices and we can go anywhere. Oh there tends to be consequences. To use another cliche, the cost of what your life can be is what your life is, almost always a fair trade. Enjoy your road never before traveled and
