Survival Art

“Some people survive and talk about it. Some people survive and go silent. Some people survive and create. Everyone deals with unimaginable pain in their own way, and everyone is entitled to that, without judgement. So the next time you look at someone’s life covetously, remember…you may not want to endure what they are enduring right now, at this moment, whilst they sit so quietly before you, looking like a calm ocean on a sunny day. Remember how vast the ocean’s boundaries are. Whilst somewhere the water is calm, in another place in the very same ocean, there is a colossal storm.”
— Nakita Gill

We all are survival artists. We make it through each day of our lives no matter what nonsense we get up to and we go to sleep facing the next one whether we are ready or not. Everyone has their share of pain, some more than others tis true but like any art some of us are more talented than others and can do a lot more with what they are given. Please remember when things get tough and you don’t know how you’ll survive any longer, to look back and see what you have managed to come through so far and know that there is still more to come.

Caught Up in The Life Storm

And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.
— Haruki Murakami

Sailing from crisis to crisis
I wonder how I survive the rain
yet I’ve come through
and each storm builds my strength.
I’ve seen those
who seem to dissolve
when blown by harsh winds
tho I have leaned to thrive.
Some say “If I make it through this…”
I have no time for ifness
I must survive
for there are those who depend on me
so I’ll walk on scattered and torn
yet constantly ennobled
and will take whatever comes my way
searching for the sun
searching for the moon
and knowing I’ll see them again.

Making It Through

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
— Maya Angelou

Survival Tips

  • No matter what happens know that you are a survivor. You have made it through this far no matter what life has thrown at you and you are still going.
  • There is always a funny aspect to anything. Work on cultivating the ability to see it even if it is black humour in the darkest of times.
  • Know that you are never truly alone. Even if you have no family and no one whom you identify as a friend, it is always possible to find someone to talk to whether it be professionals at the end of a phone line or a stranger.
  • Prayer to the deity or entity of your choice helps. It doesn’t have to be prayer, it can merely be a conversation but you are communicating with something. Even if you don’t believe anything is there, talk to the universe, scream to the skies it helps to get it out
  • At any given point of crisis, ask yourself how you are. At any given moment, the answer is fine. What has us freaked out is usually thoughts of what happened before or fear of what happens next. At this moment tho, if you can ask the question, the answer is that you are doing ok.
  • At times of high stress, it is difficult if not impossible to make long range plans. Just figure out the next thing you have to do and do that. Tunnel vision can be enormously effective when necessary in the short term.
  • Remember that life is an adventure. Every adventure has rough parts. Sometimes the trick is to remain curious as far as what can happen next.

Surviving

“Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I’m not going to make it, but you laugh inside — remembering all the times you’ve felt that way.”
― Charles Bukowski

Time after Time I have found myself in the muck of life having to deal with situations that in one way or another I set myself up. Call it lessons or call it carelessness or lack of mindfulness or perhaps at times just circumstance. I find myself neck deep in it and treading water. I sometimes wonder how will I get through this. I meditate and I pray and agonize. Tho time and time again, the answer that comes back tends to be the same. In my life I have survived many such lessons. If I survived that than I can get through this. Sure enough I get through it.
We are by nature survivors. If you don’t believe that this is true than ask yourself this? If you’re not a survivor, how did you ever make it this far? This should quiet those particular shadow voices long enough to do what you have to do. We are all infinitely strong if only we let ourselves be. We have all made it to this point in our lives no matter what we have had to live through. We all have roadblocks but rarely are there insurmountable obstacles.
Blessings, G
