Maturing the Warrior Way

“There are lots of things a warrior can do at a certain time which he couldn’t do years before. Those things themselves did not change; what changed was his idea of himself.”
― Carlos Castaneda

When we’re younger, we have a strange mixture of foolhardiness and lack of confidence. We’ll do things to do things not worried about whether they work or not and tend to give up on things faster if they don’t work the first few times we do them. Other things we won’t try at all because we doubt that we have the expertise or knowledge to pull them off successfully. As we age and gain in knowledge and experience and perhaps even wisdom (if we’re lucky) we develop both more patience and more confidence. We are willing to make mistakes and try again after we’ve learned that very few mistakes are permanent. We have seen evidence that if we follow through on our intent, eventually we will be successful and perhaps that willingness to see something through is the beginning of wisdom.

Quote of the Day – February 9 2013

“Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.”
― Miyamoto Musashi

We tend to overlook those things closest to us. Often we take for granted the things and people that help us the most in life because knowing we can count on them, we accept them as being there never quite realizing the gifts they give us every day. Likewise sometimes we miss taking steps towards our goals because they seem so far away. Yep if we hold them in sight they get closer every day. A lot of wisdom can be found in Miyamoto Musashi’s “The Book of the Five Rings”. There are after all many ways to be a warrior.

Quote of the Day – September 12 2012

I realised a long time ago that a warrior in search of his dream must take his inspiration from what he actually does & not from what he imagines himself doing.”
― Paulo Coelho, Aleph

It seems that most of my path the last three years has been about exploration and expression. It has been and hopefully will continue to be one of the most creative periods of my life . It has also been one of growth where new ideas and concepts have been tested against each other and themselves and much has been added to my view. Oh I have no plans to stop tho I have a feeling this next year is leading me towards more practicality in addition to the art and the writing I love. It’s been an amazing  journey and as always I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Quote of the Day – May 7 2012

“The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge while an ordinary man takes everything as a blessing or a curse.”
― Carlos Castaneda

“You’re nuts!” She told me. “Totally strange, I never know what’s gonna come out of you”.
“I’m a Libra”, I replied “The most balanced sign.”
She just shook her head. In reality I misstated the truth. Well, besides the fact that the Sun being in Libra when I was born is just one of many influences in my chart. Libras aren’t the most balance sign but the ones who strive for balance the most. Sometimes I think it comes naturally. When things seem to be going too well in any one aspect of my life, I tend to find a way consciously or unconsciously to upset it in another. Note I said consciously not intentionally. I tend to have an intense curiosity about different viewpoints and have gone out of my way to understand different lifestyles by experiencing them from the inside. In my youth, this led to experimentation with religious cults, substances (tho oddly enough no drug ever attracted me enough to cause addiction tho a few I had to decide to stop), economic status and just about everything else I could try. Most of these ended, I wouldn’t say badly but definitively.

Quote of the Day – December 23 2011

“Remember the quiet wonders. The world has more need of them than it has for warriors.”
–Charles de Lint

That’s not to say there’s not a place for warriors. Warriors of Light illuminating the darkness. Shadow Warriors to expose the light. Peaceful warriors to live the truth. Yet we need our sunrises, and rainbows, the dreams of five year olds and the millions of other every day things that enlivens and inspires us.

Quote of the Day – October 31 2011

“A Warrior never gives in to fear when he is searching for what he needs. Without love, he is nothing”
–Paulo Coelho

I’ve been contemplating what it means to be a warrior a bit lately. I present now some of the conclusions I’ve come to..
Does being a warrior mean knowing how to fight in a physical sense?
Only in the sense that part of a warrior means being prepared physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually for whatever may come.
Does it mean being warlike and aggressive?
It means standing up for yourself and whatever has become important whether it be ideals, archetypes or people.
Most importantly, it means standing up to fear, using it and rising above it. Even if what you fear lies within yourself…

Quote of the Day – June 30 2010 & Ascent

“Only as a warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. A warrior cannot complain or regret anything. His life is an endless challenge, and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Challenges are simply challenges.”
