“You were not there for the Beginning. You will not be there for the End… Your knowledge of what is going on can only be superficial and relative”
— William S. Burroughs

Relative time, Relative vision, Revision of time, Revision of memory changing the past to ensure a different tomorrow. Changing our future’s longing… our goals shifting towards the pleasure principle. We eat the fruit offered and leave the garden in search of new pleasures. She told us, he sold us and we felt the ecstasy. Turn left they said while other voices choir turn right so we travel in zig zags rolling our way towards our destiny.

Reality Engineering

“Nothing exists until or unless it is observed. An artist is making something exist by observing it. And his hope for other people is that they will also make it exist by observing it. I call it ‘creative observation.’ Creative viewing.”
— William S. Burroughs

Is a Unicorn real? Does a gryphon exist. Yes if only for the time it is though of. We all have reality engines behind our ears constantly bringing new things into being and banishing the old. Using out own personal creative void we bring forth into being. What’s more through our art, we, reality engineers can help others to see it through and meme seed our real the way we wish it to be.

The First Word

“Well, as you can plainly see, the possibilities are endless like meandering paths in a great big beautiful garden.”
― William S. Burroughs

When I write, quite often a word is the shortest distance between two thoughts. When I sit down to write there are occasions where I feel totally stuck There is no crossroads more intimidating than a blank screen. I mean the possibilities are infinite. This can feel frustrating. After all I have made this commitment to write at least one hundred words a day and there are both too few and way too many things to think about, talk about and write about. With so many places to go, it is way too easy to go nowhere and stall out. Finally tho I have learned a trick that seems to work every time. Start with a word.
It can be any word. That first word tho like the primal point fixes me in one reality and possibly one topic. One word leads easily to another (after all the conceptual distance between zero and one is always less than the distance between one and any other number) Once something exists it is fairly easy to get it to multiply, so one word leads to another which leads to a second and a third and before you know it, an essay or poem or story has appeared. This concept is not a new one. After all in various scriptures, the act of creation itself is described as the speaking of one word. If universal construction from the void can begin that way than surely one little blog entry can as well.

The Leave It Alone Rap

“There is nothing more provocative than minding your own business.”
― William S. Burroughs

Everybody wants to get you on side
they want you to climb in their ride
see their point and be their point man
don’t let you disagree, they want a fan
to fight off their perceived attackers
and whack all their conceived packers
but you just want to watch the game
know the two sides just the same
the drama’s unfolding and you’re just holding
on to your freedom of thought
know their’s a draught
of people just being
and maybe seeing that
no one side is right
you scream “leave me alone”
I’m not your clone
I just want to go home
this has gotten tired
and I fell pretty wired
just watching the drama you create.

I Lived

“he asked if i wouldn’t like to live completely without problems, say in greece maybe, nice climate, everything provided? i say: “when we find out what we are actually doing and who we actually are, that is the point of living…it may be only a few seconds…a few seconds of significant actions, out of a lifetime…”
― William S. Burroughs

What does it mean to live beyond existence? So much of our life is spent in day to day existing, some of it mindful but a lot of it routine. Every so often in retrospect we either look back at a period of our lives and think “There I was happy, There I lived” or perhaps the even rarer “There is nothing else I would rather be doing at any time or place. I am happy. I am alive.” Those moments make all the rest worthwhile. I know that choice can make all the difference. If we could figure out what gives us joy and purpose and focus on doing those things than we have accomplished something truly worthwhile.

Cutting Time

“When you cut into the present, the future leaks out”
― William S. Burroughs

One cut to distribute
This moment can be shared
yet it drips
past participles dangling
as I hand off
the golden shining
to future endeavours.
Meaning what?
I used to know
yet uncertainty is the gift of age
as less becomes clear.
Another present of tense time.
Yet through uncertainty
things become clearer.
We make up the future from present concepts
We alter the past through present awareness
and the dripping continues.
We make memories that haven’t happened yet
and contribute to present joy
Another cut and the scene stops
The actors leave the present stage
and the future commences.

Find the Adventure that Frees

“Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. Only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape. ”
― William S. Burroughs

Jump down the rabbit hole.
Climb the beanstalk.
Get blown by the storm.
Enter the wardrobe and follow it through.
Leave home and family as Lovers do.
Empty your bucket.
Free your mind.
Kill all Sacred Khaos.
Set off on the road that has no end with nothing in your pocket.
Open the secret door.
Follow the strange man into the old police box.
Climb aboard the midnight bus.
Enter the Chapel Perilous.
Rescue the Princess.
Take the Chance.
Find the adventure that frees. Don’t give it a second thought. Your life will be wonderful. Your life will be danger filled and frightening. It may even be horrendous at times. Tho the growth opportunities are worth it.

Giving the Muse Her Due

“Cheat your landlord if you can and must, but do not try to shortchange the Muse. It cannot be done. You can’t fake quality any more than you can fake a good meal.”
― William S. Burroughs

I was tempted to run a poem of mine seen here a few years back called “Seducing the Muse”. It would have been relevant and it would have fit the quote but there would have been an irony in it. My commitment to my writing is at least 100 words a night be they doggerel or stream of consciousness, poetry, mini essays or what not. In this, I hope not only to increase my contact with those of you who come to read and look at the pictures but it is one of the ways I seek to keep my muse involved with me. That and constantly creating more art, honing my skills and acquiring new ones. Expressing either concepts or whims or sometimes like the tarot project, I seek to do more. After all pretty abstract designs while fun and well liked often seem like popcorn, tasty yet unwilling. It’s much more of a challenge pulling an image together from start to finish and doing my all to represent it.
Some nights I can tell when the muse is happy with me. The images and concepts flow and there is a rapport between me and the expression. Other times I stare at the screen and start to play until an image appears. Then it is up to me to convey the image to other eyes in the best way possible. So that even if she left the party for awhile, the muse will return. So far it seems to be working plus she is very forgiving.

Creating Reality

“Nothing exists until or unless it is observed. An artist is making something exist by observing it. And his hope for other people is that they will also make it exist by observing it. I call it ‘creative observation.’ Creative viewing.”
― William S. Burroughs

I will enter my mind palace
and work with the star stuff there
I will enter the dark places
and use shadows
I will learn the colours of emotion
and throw them where I will
Lines and curves and little blocks of wood
I’ll use time and thyme and be used in return
People oh yes
beings of all kinds
belong on the screen before me.
For I create what I see
and forget what I’ve known before.
I invent my reality
but then don’t we all?

Freeing the Pictures That Live Inside My Mind

“Open your mind and let the pictures out”
― William S. Burroughs

When my imagination runs free, then the colours and shapes combine and I see images emerge. I midwife these designs and so create (or would transmit be a more apt word) art. When I still my inner voice, than I hear whisperings, word imagines full of nuance and song and the poetry dances before me. First tho there has to be an opening and a surrendering to the muse who then lets me have my way. First tho I have to find my silence and open my mind, my heart and my soul so that the talent can funnel through.
