Quote of the Day – March 23 2013

“In all affairs it’s a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted.”
― Bertrand Russell

Are the things we take for granted anything more than the stories we tell ourselves?  We paint ourselves as hero or victim, seldom villain, at least for most people. I have tried to describe myself as an innocent bystander in my story more often than not only to discover that I wasn’t either of those things. Still this quote has given me an idea. The next time I am feeling sad or angry about something that has transpired, perhaps I can step back and look at things from a different perspective. Perhaps its not the story that’s at fault but the way its being told. If something happened that made me angry, how would the story sound if everyone involved was wearing clown suits or in their underwear? How about if the story was being told in retrospect from six months in the future or even six years? How would the story be told by someone watching it unfold or from the point of view of the jerk who was arguing with me? Could I actually Have been the jerk who was arguing with him? I will try each of these things and report back. This may be interesting to say the least.

Quote of the Day – February 9 2013

“Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.”
― Miyamoto Musashi

We tend to overlook those things closest to us. Often we take for granted the things and people that help us the most in life because knowing we can count on them, we accept them as being there never quite realizing the gifts they give us every day. Likewise sometimes we miss taking steps towards our goals because they seem so far away. Yep if we hold them in sight they get closer every day. A lot of wisdom can be found in Miyamoto Musashi’s “The Book of the Five Rings”. There are after all many ways to be a warrior.

Quote of the Day – December 19 2012

“We can see the Divine in each speck of dust, but that doesn’t stop us from wiping it away with a wet sponge. The Divine doesn’t disappear; it’s transformed into the clean surface.”
― Paulo Coelho

Transformation is constant. It may sound cliche but I feel like I’ve spent more time becoming than I have spent being anything. Tho through everything, the good times, the bad times, the disasters, the blessings (and with good reason Carlos Castaneda says to see both of those as merely challenges rather than assign value judgements), the horrible acts that people do to each other and the wonderful acts of kindness and heroism that take place every day. There’s no part of any of it that’s not divine. If you think of the universe perfect and complete beyond time and space there are no disasters merely a different spot of colour in a multi-dimensional tapestry.

Quote of the Day – December 13 2012

“You meet a new person, you go with him and suddenly you get a whole new city…you go down new streets, you see houses you never saw before, pass places you didn’t even know were there. Everything changes.”
― Samuel R. Delany

A new city (or country or universe) exists for each person we meet. I find that to be amazing and true. If we allow ourselves to be open to another person’s point of view than even something we’ve seen hundreds of times before becomes new or different. Things like a particular flower or tree that we’ve never noticed becomes something unique and wonderful when its shown to us by an enthusiastic gardener. Even the way we walk or the direction we walk in can change through exposure to someone else’s vision.
Not every country or view that comes from another will be a happy one. Some will disturb us and some may even disgust us. When that happens I try to get to know the other person and immerse myself in their world even more. There is gold there to be mined if only that of gaining new perspective on the land we come from. Of course there are times when the land another shows us may be too much for us and therein lie the largest lessons of all

RaysReality Tunnel by G A Rosenberg

Quote of the Day – December 2 2012

“Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.”
― Bruce Lee

Tho sometimes the most difficult thing may be to discern the difference between the three. So many things in my life that I thought useless that later on became essential to know and things I thought I would always be able to use that later on proved useless. So many cant’s and shouldn’ts

What have I to offer that is totally my own? Perhaps just what is in each of use to offer, a unique perspective. Noone else looks at things exactly the way that each of us do. We each hold views of the universe that can be static but when we listen to another, the kaleidoscope that is our reality tunnel shifts just a little and if open to it we can see the world in a whole new way.
I am eternally grateful to those who have turned the kaleidoscope for me and I hope I in turn have turned it for others

Quote of the Day – October 14 2012

“It is the obvious which is so difficult to see most of the time. People say ‘It’s as plain as the nose on your face.’ But how much of the nose on your face can you see, unless someone holds a mirror up to you?”
― Isaac Asimov

It takes a certain amount of courage to look into a mirror especially when there are others watching. Will it distort my features or show me true? Yet every time we interact with another we face a mirror. Does it reflect who we believe we are or does it show a fiction, one concocted in collaboration between the holder of the mirror and ourselves? Is the reflection more accurate from friend or from stranger.
I tend to enjoy mirrors. Perhaps that shows a certain amount of vanity or perhaps I relish even the flaws that I see in them. Perhaps I’ll learn where my blind spots are so that I can teach myself to see the view. Perhaps they have yet to reflect a challenging part of myself that I have yet to look at and when I do will I smash the mirror or accept it as what it is, another perspective and another step towards truth.

Quote of the Day – August 28 2012

“You – you alone will have the stars as no one else has them…In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night…You – only you – will have stars that can laugh.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, El Principito

I consider myself fortunate to have stars that laugh, cry and love…each one lit by people who have touched my being at one time or another. Aleister Crowley channeled that “Every man and woman is a star” and so I believe that they are.. Stellar beings who light up our sky and who’s orbit we are fortunate enough to be able to find ourselves in for moments or lifetimes…

The above may sound corny to some. But still it seems in our day to day existence it becomes so easy to look down on people, suspect their motives and otherwise belittle them if only in our own minds…but if we can see them and ourselves as stars burning brightly through the heavens then even the ones who irritate us, the ones who piss us off continuously become something magnificent

It might not make it easier to like them or what they represent but it lends perspective.

Last Dance by G A Rosenberg

Quote of the Day – February 13 2012

“Perspective – Use It or Lose It. If you turned to this page, you’re forgetting that what is going on around you is not reality.
Think about that.”
–Richard Bach

Perspective

A while back I got into a conversation with my friend Rob. He was having some problems and obviously wanted to discuss them. Like many of us, Rob tends to have a dramatic streak. I think it might be useful to share the conversation as I found that what i told him was inspired (i actually felt the light bulb come on in my head) and gives some much needed perspective:

Rob: My life sucks
Me: What do you mean?
Rob: I can’t get a job. My parents want me out of the house..
Me: that’s rough
Rob: I don’t have a girl I’m SICK of feeling alone. I can’t concentrate when i meditate
Me: Are you just letting what comes out comes out?
Rob: Whatever man. I just want to kill myself. I’m not just saying it either. I’m going to
Me: (Somewhat at a loss) Have you tried talking to anybody?
Rob: Like who? Shrinks are just going to want to medicate me. My friends don’t take anything seriously. Just some people here to talk to. It’s not worth it. I’m just gonna do it. You can read about it in the paper or online tomorrow

At this point I was flailing a bit mentally trying to come up with the right thing to say.
Finally I had a flash

Me: Ok Rob, so you want to do this. To some extent, I believe that people have the right to end if if they want to but before you do I have one question. Do you believe in reincarnation?

Rob: uh..yeah
Me: Have you ever stopped to consider that this might be one of your easier lives and that your next one may be even more challenging?
Long pause
Rob: Fuck you.

Long pause
Rob: 🙂

After that the conversation got a lot lighter and we were able to bounce possible non-lethal solutions to his problem off of each other.

Gazing on the Infinite by G A Rosenberg

Quote of the Day – February 5 2012

“For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.”
–Leonardo Da Vinci

How can we settle down on the farm after we’ve seen the big city? How, once we have gained awareness of space both inner and outer can we be content to settle back in our own heads without wanting to be out again. Yet life becomes a combination of many things, before enlightenment we take out the garbage, after enlightenment we take out the garbage and occasionally during. Still once we have been yanked outside of our earthly life, our eyes will forever look skyward and perhaps within. Namaste, G

Quote of the Day – October 20 2011

‎”A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.”
–Antoine de Saint-Exupery

All it takes is a bit of vision. If each being was seen by someone with vision, we would all be known as the radiant beings that we are. In my life, I have met very few people whom I found ugly or unattractive, usually it takes perhaps just one quality to make each person shine… -g a rosenberg
