What Does It Mean?

“And people get all fouled up because they want the world to have meaning as if it were words… As if you had a meaning, as if you were a mere word, as if you were something that could be looked up in a dictionary. You are meaning.”
— Alan Watts

We all want meaning. For some of us, it may merely be a matter of looking for something to define ourselves. They see themselves as being Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Satanist, Atheist or what have you so that they have an answer to what the world means even if it is someone else’s answer. Others seek long and hard to solve the so-called unsolvable questions about where we come from, where we are going and what it all means. They may, as I have, listen to as many different answers as possible mixing and matching until they have an answer to themselves as to the meaning of their lives. Still others may never be satisfied with any answer they have so they keep searching. Still others may have an inner connection to the truth. It might not be the full objective truth but it is their answer.
In any of these cases, it is not so much that each of these people have discovered the meaning of life as much as they have given life the meaning they need.
I do believe that there is objective truth tho I believe that while living in physical bodies we can only understand a part of the vast whole so that any meaning that we choose is at best only a partial understanding. Yet ultimately we are the meaning of our lives because it is around us and our beliefs that our lives are shaped.

Meaningful, Meaning Less

“The poet…is the man of metaphor: while the philosopher is interested only in the truth of meaning, beyond even signs and names, and the sophist manipulates empty signs…the poet plays on the multiplicity of signifieds.”
— Jacques Derrida

Use my words
to find their meaning
play with their tone
to find their truth
concepts, shadowy but obscure
may only come from images
reflected in the mind’s eye
I use my meaning
to find my words
rolling from tongue to song
to ear to hear
what resonates
and is returned
Sense the tense
in words and truth
Release it
and it changes.

The Tower and Our Inner Galaxies

“Never apologize for burning too brightly or collapsing into yourself every night. That is how galaxies are made.”
— Tyler Kent White

We burn each day living out the dramas of our lives. So much of it is self-create, the little bits of self-sabatoge we do to either make our lives more interesting or to keep ourselves going in our shaky towers, always about to fall. We do what we can to keep them balanced. Occasionally we are smart enough to collapse them ourselves so that we can build up again stronger, somehow. That collapse is ok tho. Sometimes it is necessary. Sometimes we have to either have our faces rubbed into just how shaky this life we have created for ourselves is and sometimes we have to rub our faces in it ourselves. Still we might get surprised or feign surprise at the collapse even to ourselves but hey that’s how we keep the game interesting. Still hopefully each time we rebuild it is on steadier ground.

Gift From the Void

To me, all creativity is magic. Ideas start out in the empty void of your head – and they end up as a material thing, like a book you can hold in your hand. That is the magical process. It’s an alchemical thing. Yes, we do get the gold out of it but that’s not the most important thing. It’s the work itself.”
— Alan Moore

Process creation
within and without
something from nothing
but a spark and a seed
mixing and breathing
my will into being
with each colour and word
I continue
Manifestation
reaction and change
texture and pattern
and rearrange
Completion never
yet this piece is done
Another one starts
the void’s gift again.

Trapped In Dim Twilight

“There are dead stars that still shine because their light is trapped in time. Where do I stand in this light, which does not strictly exist?”
— Don DeLillo

Trapped in dim twilight
I seek..
I don’t know what
motivation for my actions
some shadowed satisfaction
traction to gain reaction
or purpose and reason
the treasons that I inspired
in the days when I was wired,
not tired
like now in this light
feel like giving up the night
trying to make things right
but can’t
because the stars went out
what’s that about?
I used to shout
at injustice
but like the stars
that part has died
the days I cried
and for what?
I’ve made it this far
I’ll become my own star
with light forever blazing
I’ll create a new life
find some new strife
it will be amazing.

Internal Wanderers

“I earnestly confronted my devil and behaved with him as with a real person. This I learned in the Mysterium: to take seriously every unknown wanderer who personally inhabits the inner world, since they are real because they are effectual.”
— Carl Jung

Gods and Demons walk among me
wearing each other’s drag
often in the same being
They speak with heroes
and hold debates
each one illuminates my process in some way
Archetypal imaginings
more real in some ways
than those I meet
outside my head
As I get to know them
they teach me
elements of being
they then move on
to be replaced
by talking space dogs and the like
Parts of me not yet realized
New shadows yet to cast.

Spending Time On and With

“My solitude doesn’t depend on the presence or absence of people; on the contrary, I hate who steals my solitude without, in exchange, offering me true company.”
— Friedrich Nietzsche

I love the company of friends. People whom I can unwind with and be myself. It is easy to walk around with the self dressed in cordial drag presenting the correct social face but it is wearying. After awhile I want to go off by myself or open a book or be doing almost anything because social psychic drag itches more than the shirt that comes with a rented tuxedo. I much prefer friends with whom I can strip down to my psychic underwear with. Those who’s moods and modes I can handle and who can handle mine. I suppose there are people whom we spend time on and people whom we spend time with and I know inevitably which brings me comfort at the end of the evening. They are the ones who are true companions on the journey.
