Life – The Spectacular

“Suddenly you’re ripped into being alive. And life is pain, and life is suffering, and life is horror, but my god you’re alive and it’s spectacular. ”
–Joseph Campbell

I know many people who can say that they’re enjoying their life and they find this current period of their existence to be sweet but I have yet to meet anyone who believes that life is easy. Heartbreak, pain and suffering happen to us all and with any luck they are only occasional visitors that drop off their gifts and leave. I know for many they move in and linger. They eat all the good food, wear our clothes and leave gray muck in the bathtub. Eventually tho if only for short respites they leave. Even when the vicissitudes of life are with us tho, life is pretty amazing and if we let ourselves be swept along with it we can forget about the things that drag us down and appreciate the sun on the waters, the breeze in the air or the smile of a baby. Even our suffering can be appreciated because if nothing else it is ours and we are alive to feel it.

The Tear

“I did not know how to reach him, how to catch up with him… The land of tears is so mysterious.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

You watched in silence
your old home torn apart
not one word spoken
I didn’t know what to say
and you
you showed nothing
one tear washed down your cheek
and it was over
I would have saved that tear
like a precious gem
or kissed it away
The tears we shed in silence
the blood of emotion escapes
and it is gone
leaving only echoes
somewhere in our soul
Tho you cried
somehow it was shared
tho I couldn’t touch you
and the release
like the memory
is gone.

Walk Beneath the Secret Moon

“The moon likes secrets. And secret things. She lets mysteries bleed into her shadows and leaves us to ask whether they originated from otherworlds, or from our own imaginations.”
— Charles de Lint

The moon is waning now but still close to full. The clouds tonight held it shrouded, mysterious with its light spilling out from the bottom giving just enough illumination so that I could see the road while walking my dog. The shadows held sway and I wondered at the secrets that they held. Sounds and smells hold sway when you cannot trust your eyes and the imagination fills in the rest. I love walking beneath the shadowed moonlight for there within illusions I can recreate the world and make of it what I will. Come walk with me beneath the pale light and together we shall have an adventure.

Jumping Off Cliffs

“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.”
― Kurt Vonnegut

I dare to move forward without knowing what lies ahead. If I stumble I will get up. No matter what life has thrown at me I have survived and chances are I will survive this next part as well. If I don’t make it then this is as good a time as any other but still I will have made the attempt and I have kept the adventure that is being alive happening. I will endure and I will persist and no matter what happens I will find the humour. For there is little for me that is worse than giving up on life while there is breath in my body and settling for the safe route.

Knowledge and Understanding

“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”
— Albert Einstein

Knowledge is easy to come by these days. Our phones and our computers put a world of facts at our fingertips. Yet how much of what we know do we truly understand? It is one thing to know that a stove top that is in use is too hot to touch but to understand it you have to experience what it is to be burned. To me understanding is akin to the term grok that Robert Heinlein used in his novel “Stranger in a Strange Land”. It means to not only have knowledge of something but to become one with it, to have it live inside your skin. Most spiritual knowledge is only words and paradox without understanding. Once the understanding is reached than the paradoxes can be embraced. It is easy to be a know it all in today’s world. To truly give knowledge meaning tho we need to understand.
On the qabalistic Tree of Life, the second and third spheres (sephiras) are Cookman which means Wisdom and Binah Understanding. Wisdom is considered active and Understanding passive and sitting across on the same level of the tree means that they form a certain dichotomy. In between them is the hidden sphere D’aath which means Knowledge. The Path that joins the Three is that represented by the Empress card of the tarot which holds the meaning of the full-blown creative impulse. It fits rather well if you think of it as it takes wisdom used in a creative way to turn knowledge into understanding.

Hunting the Spark

“You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.”
― Jack London

Be very very quiet. I am hunting inspiration. I listen to friends speak and sometimes in the odd moment they say something that sets thoughts cascading and I write or draw or find insight into something that’s been puzzling me for years.Occasionally I find inspiration in the words to songs that I had forgotten or in a melody that reaches inside of me and pulls on a thread that I have long let lie. I often become inspired by dreams or by meditation, the quiet moments walking the dog or doing laundry where the mind finds the exact answer it has been looking for. Still sometimes none of those things work and I call on my muse only to hear no reply. Her messages have been forwarded and her mailbox is full. In those times, I need to actively seek it myself and go hunting for the words and images I momentarily lack.
