Accepting Responsibility

“Accepting responsibility for your life is your first and most essential act of empowerment; you cannot grow in awareness if you are full of conditions and reasons why you cannot attain whatever you desire.”
— Barbara Marciniak

Surrendering The Old For the New

“Anytime you’re gonna grow, you’re gonna lose something. You’re losing what you’re hanging onto to keep safe. You’re losing habits that you’re comfortable with, you’re losing familiarity.”
— James Hillman

What’s that? In order to become someone new, I have to let go of who I am now? I have to surrender things like self-pity and victimization and start taking responsibility for my own choices? You’re telling me that in the long run I’ll be happier but that at first it may be rough? Then you tell me that I will have to give up worrying about what everyone else may be doing wrong and focus on my own shadow? Hmmm this may be tough. Tho in the long run, growing up happens eventually and it feels like it might be about time. Perhaps, past it.

Falling

“We’re in a freefall into future. We don’t know where we’re going. Things are changing so fast, and always when you’re going through a long tunnel, anxiety comes along. And all you have to do to transform your hell into a paradise is to turn your fall into a voluntary act. It’s a very interesting shift of perspective and that’s all it is… joyful participation in the sorrows and everything changes.”
― Joseph Campbell

Falling
aimlessly down the well
of my own failings
Have I lost my way or tripped?
Where will I land?
Flailing
trying desperately to undo
what has led me here
Can I find my way back to
where I was before?
Floating
resigned to the crashing end
and feeling peace
Hasn’t all led me to this?
Isn’t this natural?
Flying
triumphantly driving my way down
and making it happen
Have I found liberation?
What can happen next?

Taking the Ride

“When you are on the dancefloor, there is nothing to do but dance.”
― Umberto Eco

How often do sign up for something such as a relationship, a job or even an outing with friends and then when things get rough we either complain or bail? One of my favourite expressions is “I bought ticket so now we take the ride” tho Umberto Eco says it more elegantly in the above quote. In other words, if I engage in something than I need to take responsibility for how it turns out whether that be good, bad or otherwise. That doesn’t mean staying in a bad situation as much as it means accepting what comes and making informed decisions based on the highest good for all.

Happiness On the Menu

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert

I have met many people who deserve happiness and by and large I agree with them. However quite often these people feel act as if they are in a fancy menu and it is someone’s job to bring them happiness, exactly the way they want it. I guess I see my life as more of a buffet. Happiness is always on the menu but we need to get out of our seats and go up and choose it. There are other things on the menu as well, guilt, doubt, regret, sorrow. Too often we become so enticed by either the smell wafting up from those dishes or by the bright colours and containers that they are served in that we choose those things instead. All the time we do so we insist that what we want is happiness. When we find something else on our plate even when it is of our own choosing, we tend to blame the restaurant or perhaps the people we are dining with. Didn’t the choice we made look so good when it was on their plate?
Happiness is out there. It is not up to anyone or anything else to bring us happiness, we have to choose it. When we choose something else, that’s fine, after all variety is great every now and then but let’s take responsibility. We made the choice. After we’re finished we can always make room and grab some happiness afterwards. Perhaps with a nice bottle of delight. I hear it’s a good year for it.

Quote of the Day – November 5 2011

“I dont want to live in the kind of world where we dont look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I cant chnage the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.”
― Charles de Lint

Yep another Charles deLint quote but then one of the reasons I love his stories so much might be because often I can imagine being one of his characters pretty easily. Feeling so much love, connectedness, involvement and concern yet coming from a somewhat damaged past. Learning to take responsibility for my own story. Funny, how often I hear people who blame their parents for the direction their life has taken and the choices they make. If they can’t blame their parents, they blame the government, their boss, their ex anything except look in the mirror. I know that life can be tough. I’ve seen it. Yet if your boss, your government, your ex or your life sucks, change it. If you stay in a situation in which you don’t feel you can be happy, then know why you stay. You must be getting something out of it otherwise you would not remain. We have the freedom. We can create new lives for our selves at any moment. I guess there does remain one problem. You drew that boss, ex, situation to you for a reason, if you haven’t dealt with it you’ll repeat it. You take your life with you. Which I don’t see as a bad thing. Namaste
