As the Spirit Moves You

“Indeed, to cast a spell is simply to spell, to manipulate words, to change people’s consciousness.
And I believe that this is why an artist or a writer is the closest thing in the contemporary world that you are likely to see to a shaman”
— Alan Moore

Speak to the spirits around you
for they see things that we cannot
Listen to their voices on the wind
Grass, tree and mountain breeze
The flowers on the path
Dogs have Buddha nature
and cats have visions
withheld from us
that they share with those deemed worthy
Invoke the deity in all things
call it forth and watch the world come alive.

Gift From the Void

To me, all creativity is magic. Ideas start out in the empty void of your head – and they end up as a material thing, like a book you can hold in your hand. That is the magical process. It’s an alchemical thing. Yes, we do get the gold out of it but that’s not the most important thing. It’s the work itself.”
— Alan Moore

Process creation
within and without
something from nothing
but a spark and a seed
mixing and breathing
my will into being
with each colour and word
I continue
Manifestation
reaction and change
texture and pattern
and rearrange
Completion never
yet this piece is done
Another one starts
the void’s gift again.

Building Dreams with Art, Magick and Effort

“I believe that Magic is Art and Art whether it be music, writing, sculpture or any other, is literally magic. Art, like any magic, the science of manipulating symbols, words or images, to achieve changes in consciousness… Indeed to cast a spell is simply to manipulate words, to change people’s consciousness, and this is why I believe that an artist or a writer is the closest thing in the contemporary world to a Shaman.”
— Alan Moore

“The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.”
— Philip K Dick

Entranced in the spell of your words and art
I came along for the vision
Together we created clouds of wonder
and invited friends to join in
but one can’t live on clouds for long
without the substance to back it up.
Maybe we need to weave the spell again.

Enlivened by the height of the tower
we built upon the sandy beachfront
Together we felt when tragedy struck
and washed it out to sea
For how long can a castle last
without a good foundation
Perhaps we need to build it up again.

Magick can create wondrous things with
word and art combining to make them real
Yet words fail without effort to back them
leaving fading images behind.
I want to build a life with you
together with effort we’ll see it through
We’ll work and create the dream anew.

Wake-Up Call

“Much of magic as I understand it in the Western occult tradition is the search for the Self, with a capital S. This is understood as being the Great Work, as being the gold the alchemists sought, as being the Will, the Soul, the thing we have inside us that is behind the intellect, the body, the dreams. The inner dynamo of us, if you like. Now this is the single most important thing that we can ever attain, the knowledge of our own Self. And yet there are a frightening amount of people who seem to have the urge not just to ignore the Self, but actually seem to have the urge to obliterate themselves. This is horrific, but you can almost understand the desire to simply wipe out that awareness, because it’s too much of a responsibility to actually posses such a thing as a soul, such a precious thing. What if you break it? What if you lose it? Mightn’t it be best to anesthetize it, to deaden it, to destroy it, to not have to live with the pain of struggling towards it and trying to keep it pure? I think that the way that people immerse themselves in alcohol, in drugs, in television, in any of the addictions that our culture throws up, can be seen as a deliberate attempt to destroy any connection between themselves and the responsibility of accepting and owning a higher Self and then having to maintain it.”
— Alan Moore

There is something inside of us that calls to us no matter how hard we resist. We can drink, do drugs, watch violent movies and sports, treat each other like shit yet still even when we try to quiet our inner self it speaks out. Perhaps it is in acts of self-sabatoge as that inner self tries to rouse us from our self-induced slumber. Perhaps we have an experience where for just a second we are connected to that higher self and know beyond mere belief that what we have been running from all this time is both fierce and beautiful. It may be just the right conversation at just the right time that does it but few of us can resist it when it happens. For at least a brief time we wake up knowing that there is something more to strive for. Tho we may choose to hit the snooze button and return to our slumber, once heard that voice cannot be fully ignored.

Thought Ghosts

“Consciousness, unprovable by scientific standards, is forever, then, the impossible phantom in the predictable biologic machine, and your every thought a genuine supernatural event. Your every thought is a ghost, dancing.”
― Alan Moore

At night
lying in bet
the thought ghosts come out to play
some bear chains
concerns about the past
or worries about mundane matter
Others dance
an ongoing soundtrack to dreams
joyous, somber, calming and terrifying
in their turn
Some delight in their whimsy
and some filled with awe
as archetypes and deities visit
and alter the landscape as
only they can.
Once I saw a whimsy
making lyrics of my friends
another singing dirty rhymes
while eating ice cream
then there was the dragons
keeping their own council
but overwhelming with their presence
I love to live inside their heads
and they return the favour
One by one they fall silent
as I pass through their land on the way to sleep.

Just My Imagination…

“See I’m Imagination. I’m Real, and I’m the best friend you ever had. Who do you think got you all this cool stuff?
The clothes you’re wearing, the room, the house, the city that you’re in. Everything in it started out in the human imagination”
— Alan Moore, Promethea

Through our imagination we create. Without the ability to imagine a finished result would we do anything volitionally? We imagine each step of the way the results of our actions and then decide our next actions on how well the results matched what we imagined and how we picture the result of our modifications. Our art and our speech are the expressions of our imagination. Everything we do and basically everything we allow ourselves to be. Ultimately we are all magicians using our will to express our imaginations.

Quote of the Day – March 16 2013

“We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions. Yet seen from another’s vantage point, as if new, it may still take the breath away.”
― Alan Moore

What is new?
What can I do as if I have never done it before?
I can type in my sleep (and indeed have)
but if I share the same insights
in the same way I have
then what have I accomplished?
When we meet new people do we
try to see as they see
with perspective made new ?
We change and challenge each other continuously
Let’s remake the universe together
even better

Quote of the Day – November 4 2012

“Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.”
― Alan Moore

Perhaps some of us tell our stories by living them.. Others by pantomime or satire. Perhaps everything we say or do becomes our story even in the smallest of chapters, the map that comes the closes to being the territory yet never quite reaches it. After all I feel pretty sure by this point that what and whom i am goes well beyond this life. This life yet one story within a far greater volume. A story I gladly tell even if Shakespeare’s Macbeth is right that it is told by an idiot and in the end has little meaning. Nah, I put greater credence into stories than that. Each one has some meaning if only that it is a snowflake, unique and beautiful.

Quote of the Day – January 8 2012

““Artists use lies to tell the truth. Yes, I created a lie. But because you believed it, you found something true about yourself.”
— Alan Moore

If you think about discovery of truth as being an ever evolving process, than what we believe at any time would be when compared to Truth (large t) would be a lie or at least an approximation. The thing about lies as most of us learn most often they don’t hold up. The more we build on the foundations of the less true, the shakier it becomes until it becomes perceptible to us…How cool when we can learn from art, story, or performance lessons that shake our perceived reality so that the upheavals become less necessary. Life Storm by G A Rosenberg

Quote of the Day – October 10 2011

“You’re in a prison, Evey.  You were born in a prison.  You’ve been in a prison so long, you no longer believe there’s a world outside.”

               — V (Alan Moore)

Yet, many of us finally become aware of the prison bars; the confines that define our reality. Once that awareness hits us, we either desire more than anything else to break our chains or we cower in fear at the idea of making our way into the unknown. “Here there be Dragons” as the old world maps say. Dragons to teach and dragons to slay and new worlds to explore. Existence offers more than the struggles we’ve been taught. We can refuse to be commodities. We can refuse to be the programmed sheep that so many wish for us to be.. I see a frightening new world out there that yearns to be born out of the remains of this old one that seems screwed up beyond repair. One built from ideals and ideas of heart, mind and spirit.
